Bronx New York 1966.. I remember it well.
The Clock mounted on the wall of my classroom seemed to be frozen in time. I watched very carefully as its sturdy hands moved painfully slow.I tried to will it foward by sheer will ,knowing the moment was just a heart beat away. My teacher was giving last minute instruction, but no matter how much I tried to pay attention the clock had me under its spell. I closed my eyes and then it happenned. Never was there a more perfect moment. It was three oclock ,and the last day of school. The bell rang and we headed toward freedom and another rite of childhood....Summer Vacation had begun.
My Childhood Summer Vacations in New York are rich with vivid and happy memories. We would pack the car and head Upstate to the town of Monroe located in southern Orange County..It was enchanting there and a huge contrast from the hustle and bustle of city life. It was my summer home for the next eight years.
The carefree days of summer were filled with the most amazing adventures. We stayed at a place called Sunny Croft, the former estate of George M Cohan. Mr Cohan was rather famous and the toast of Broadway once upon a time. He wrote " "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy", "Your a grand old flag" and " Give my regards to Broadway" to name a few.. Good old George was born on the Fourth of July. Every fourth my friends and I would faithfully conduct a sceance to bring him back among the living. I do not know if we conjured up George for sure, but we never stopped trying.
Summer was magic.Day camp, camaraderie and bug juice. Telling ghost stories around a crackling campfire, catching fireflies and wishing on a shooting star. First crushes and my first dance. It seems boys did not have cooties after all. We made everything imaginable out of popsicle sticks .I became quite skilled at making bright colorful lanyard key chains.I was team captain at color war and lead the green wranglers to victory.I felt like a star as I practiced my thespian skills in our annual musical production. We watched movies in a converted barn and caught tadpoles down by the lake. Life was idyllic and innocent and those feelings of youthful summer will never go away.
