We hired a young lady, a high school senior to help us with some filing around the office. She's very young, very sweet and today she made me feel so old.
As our new hire sat down at an electric typewriter near my desk, she looked over at me and asked me if I'd help her. I said sure, told her where to find the 'on' button, and once she had it on I said "There you go, it works like any other typewriter."
She started to giggle.
I watched her as she was holding the label she wanted to type, seriously looking over the typewriter over, looking for something, giggling all the while. Finally it dawned on me she had no clue how the paper fed into the typewriter roller.
"Have you ever used a typewriter before?" I asked.
"No" she said. Giggle.
I teased her "Didn't you take a typing class in school?" not really thinking they still made kids take that class.
"Yes, but it was on the computer" she said. "I've never used a real typewriter before" and she giggled some more.
So I showed her the basics and told her now she could use any typewriter. She kept giggling while she figured out how to do everything. Someone in the office chimed in the kids are using pc's in 1st & 2nd grade now. I told her she made me feel so old, thanks a lot. And we both giggled about that.
