Hey, all you rancher, farmers and horse lovers - what do you use to keep the flies off the horses? I'm only having problems with one horse (maybe it's all that white on her) but so far nothing seems to work for long with her. I have tried a few home remedies (I have a preference for the natural medicines) the collar and leg bands, and even a spray or two. They aren't real bad yet but summer is only starting and I don't want it to be an uncomfortable one for her.
Your advice/help is greatly appreciated.
I have to get to work pretty quick here but later in the day I will share the news of the latest arrival - the horse no one could touch. Well now that I started, here's the short version. We herded him in one of the pastures after he had been running wild for a week or two and his owner is beside himself, frustrated "unable to do anything with the d**** animal and all that." I see hope in his eyes and wanting to be cared for and loved, so what the heck? Bought him, herded him and brought him home. Day two: He has a halter on (no one could even get a rope on him or get close to him. Day three: He sneaks up behind me and nudges me for attention. He is still a little flighty and hand shy but I thought it would take weeks to get where we are now. A little love and attention goes a long way though (not to mention patience and a kind voice and I don't think he was getting much of either)
It amazes me when people get an animal and just fence it up, tie it up or whatever and spend no time with it and then call the animal "stubborn," "stupid" and so on. hmm... I don't think the fault is in the animal - and that's not a thought come to think of it - it's a fact!!

Kreso dip works sometimes. I've also heard that a 1/10 solution of garlic and water keeps horse flies away(and it is super safe for the animals)......

I use a Avon Skin-so-soft and vinegar solution that I spray on them. It works wonderfully!

I've found that there are people who expect to start a relationship without taking time to get to know the other person. It's the same with animals, expecially with dogs and horses.
I'm sure you've met someone and right away knew that you were going to be friends, it's the same with your horse. I've never even ridden a horse, and know this to be true. Enjoy your new friend!

Oh I don't know about the other for flies......... but I LOVE Skin So Soft and wish I had some right now. I use white vinegar for EVERYTHING too.... cleaning my chrome and making it shine..... keeping drains smelling good, setting creases, tons of stuff.. cleaning my coffee maker...... I buy it buy the gallon. So, I think that has to be good advice.
I have for years used pharmeceutical grade Tea Tree Oil for mosquitoes on ME... so recently I tried it on Rufus puppy. Trust me, if you are going to a pool party, try the SSS, cause the Tea Tree Oil smells eeck..... but seems to work.
Do NOT buy the cosmetic crap in Tea Tree Oil....... not worth your money or your bites.
