Stop... count to 2 --- that is how often someone needs a blood transfusion. Yet fewer than 5 percent of people who are able to give blood actually do so . As many of you may or may not know, I am a regular (meaning every 56 days) blood donor. I have a very rare blood type AB negative and I am aware of how little there is. I am approaching my 5 gallon mark soon and the last time I gave blood one of the American Red Cross people approached me and asked me to participate in their 2007 Summer Campaign and ask people to please give!

Blood donations during the summer months are critical because of increased travelling being done and the increase in traffic and other numerous accidents related to people being out and about.

Each donation of blood means another life or up to 3 lives (people rushed to the hospital after a trauma, children fighting leukemia, fire fighter who've been burned, grandparents needing heart surgery or hip replacement, people like the ones in your neighborhood, or in your own family) can be saved or prolonged with your generous gift. I would also like to inform those that have type "O" blood who are thinking it is very common that it doesn't mean that the patients in hospitals don't need your donation. Type O patients can ONLY receive Type O blood, so more often than not, type O blood is in short supply.

For those worried about A.I.D.S. -- YOU CANNOT CONTRACT IT BY DONATING BLOOD. All the Red Cross equipment used to collect the blood is sterile. Each collection bag has a self-contained sterile need that is used for one donation only -- YOURS.

Also if your were ever deferred from giving blood because of your pulse, temperature, iron count or blood count, it was most probably a temporary condition. Many donors who were deffered are able to donate successfully. And taking medications usually will not disqualify you from donating. I am also borderline anemic, but I load up on iron-full foods a week before the donation (raisins are the best, any type of legume [beans, etc.] red beets and liver) and only twice was it lower than acceptable and I suffered no side effects from the donation.

I understand it is summer and you have plans on vacations, cookouts, etc., but please think of those people in hospitals who need this gift of life, without your donation they may not have another summer or a cookout.

When you donate a unit of blood (a little less than a pint, adults usually have 10-12 pints in their body), it is separated into its components. Each component meets a different medical need: surgery patients, cancer patients or bone marrow tansplant recipients need your platelets to prevent hemorrhaging, patients suffering burns, shock or dehydration need your plasma.

Contact your local Red Cross association to set up a time for your donation. You can find the location in your yellow pages. The actual donation time will take about 6-8minutes. It takes only 24 hours for your body to replace your blood volume or your plasma. Do not to any heavy lifting with the arm you doingated with for 5 hours after the donation. Your body needs 4-8 weeks to replace the red cells. Thus you can donate again in 8 weeks - 56 days. Remember to eat breakfast or lunch before donating and be sure to drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages after you donate.

There is also a donation of only platelets called apheresis which takes longer than a regular blood donation, but if you have a little more time, you might want to do this. I have been matched with an 12 year old girl with leukemia. This procedure can be done every 14 days without interferring with your blood donation ability of every 56 days.

Thank you for reading this blog and for those of you that have decided to help.. many, many thanks for all those people that truly need it.

I have no idea what blood type I am. My dad was told he had a rare blood type, so you've given me a wonderful reminder of how needed giving blood is. I don't know where to go to donate. Can you give me an idea of who I need to contact?

Thanks for this blog!

I hit the 5 gallon mark, way back in my late 20's. and havent donated since.

and I am without excuse!

I was greatful, when my oldest daughter was in critical condition, after a car wreck, that there was enough blood available for her, as she required alot.

Thanks for this reminder.

but I am curious, things I have heard, which also could motivate others, if they are true.........

1) if you donate, and have diseases, detected by blood, things even such as aids, doesnt donating offer a detection for your own health? and if you do have such diseases, they would let you know?

2) by constantly donating, and renewing your blood, it is actually a very healthy thing for your own body?

I have heard these comments about it, but I dont know if they are true.

To anyone wanting to donate... contact your local Red Cross, they have a central location and they are always on the road at various other locations. The Red Cross in your area will be listed in the yellow pages. They make every effort to schedule you within your busy life, so please do try...you will be saving at least 3 lives with one donation.

I am very happy some have given so much, and the only reason I blogged this is that I was asked if I could spread the word about how low the reserves are and how desperately needed it is.

As for the questions.. The blood that is donated is run thru a gambit of all sorts of testing for ALL diseases. Actually when you give, when the nurse takes your vitals it is a mini checkup.. but to answer the question, if any of you are looking to find out if you have a disease, they do notify all recipients if there is a problem so that you will NOT donate again as they throw out any blood they have tested and the results showed diseases present... there is no risk to the person receiving the blood.

I have no statistics on it being healthier for you to donate.. however, I am extremely healthy and perhaps it may be due to the factor that I donate every 56 days... ask the Red Cross...

And thank you all for your wonderful comments and willingness to give the gift of life... If I could, I would give each of you that donate all my kudos for the next month. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.. when my daughter was born, as I never got my rogam shot after my 1st positive baby soon enough, she started making antibodies against my negative factor, I was extremely sick while carrying her, but she, the little angel, needed a blood transfusion immediately.. where it not for donors.. she might not be here to constantly keep me on my toes.. she is now a lovely, intelligent and caring woman.

Very good summer reminder!
Both of my girls donate & also go in the extra time for platelets. One is Type 0.
Unfortunately I don't have enough of my own to offer.... used to & did. But I had an occasion last year to need some of someone else's and was very greatful to have it there ready.

Thank you to all who donate!
Thank you C for the reminder.

I donate blood until I got told by my doctor, I couldn't anymore.

Donating blood is one of the easiest and most meaningful way to make a difference in so many peoples lives when it really counts.

Thanks for writing the blog. It's a great message to get out there.

Thanks......

I donated like clockwork when I was younger...then went through a spell where...ahem...my blood probably wasn't fit for anyone to use....now have been donating regularly again for the last 15 years...to me it's kind of like voting...if you can't get off your ass long enough to do a REALLY simple righteous thing, what good are you??

All I would add to what you've already said is that those of us who have the more common types (I'm O+) should keep in mind that means there are many more folks out there that need that kind of blood than the "oddball" stuff...so if anything, it's as least as important to keep em stocked up with it too....

And, at least around here, they give you a really good chicken salad sandwich when you're done!!....

Thanks luvs...very informative blog. Lots of people
probably didn't even think about this because its not
a constant reminder in the local papers or elsewhere. So many
willing here to do their part as you can see by the replies.
Great reminder from you, you're such a thoughtful lady!.....
