Many of you know, my car broke down recently. In order to save on gas and also save up more money to buy a decent car, I decided to wait until fall, meanwhile using my sons Moped to get around. It was all well and good until yesterday afternoon!
I started out right after he got home from swim practice. Went to the P.O. and bought the money order for the upcoming MD camping trip. Realized I had forgotten to bring the address and all the information I had to put on it. Went back home, filled everything out and back to the P.O. Thought while I was out, I would go check out the RV that I have been thinking about renting for the trip. After that, I stopped by Big Lots and found a few little bargains. I strapped them on the back with bungee cords and headed home.
I was just minding my own business riding down the highway when a big 4 wheel drive pick up goes flying by me. At the same time, the handle bars start to shake and I knew I had blown the front tire. I hit my breaks, and tried to ease to a stop... Didn't work, laid that baby down! It drug me for just a little ways, knocked my helmet off (that my son insists I wear, THANK YOU SON!) Just wish he had told me to fasten it properly too. It did take the worst of the landing though, before flying off my head, landing about 6 feet away. Although it couldn't have scrambled my brains anymore than they already are, who knows, might have even helped a little!
Three ladies stopped, all of them rushing over asking me if I was ok. All three had their ears to a cell phone calling 911. Bless their hearts. Thank God, none of them were taking pictures of my fat butt sitting there in the road. I also had them call my son and tell him what happened and that I was ok.
I kept telling them I was ok, just a little shook up and had road rash up and down my right leg and lower arm. The coppers got there, and they were shocked. Dispatch had told them it was a motor cycle accident, and those are usually BAD! They insisted on calling an ambulance, (thats gonna cost me!) even though I told them I was fine. Only my pride hurt. I told them I needed to move over into the grass at the side of the road, they all yelled "DON'T MOVE Until the ambulance gets here!" Easy for them to say...wasn't their butt burning on the pavement!
The EMT's got there, and one of them was kinda pissy, cuz I wasn't hurt. The other one put a bandage on my foot so I could get my shoe back on easier. I signed my life away on their form saying I didn't want to go to the hospital, but would pay with my blood since it interrupted their day to come and see nothing!
One of the cops said he would take me home and he would call a wrecker to come pick up the moped. HEEEELLLLL NOOOO! I wasn't leaving that thing sitting alongside the road for someone to come and load up in their truck! My son would have KILLED ME! I had him call my boss and she sent her boyfriend and neighbor to come pick it/me up. Much cheaper, only $20.00.
So they get me home, and my son comes out of the house, looking at his moped. They get it unloaded and he looks it over good, and says, "Wow Mom, its not bad at all, just a few small scratches."
I'm thinking, Hell yea, its only got a few stratches! My fat butt stayed between it and the pavement! Check out MY scratches!

I guess I learned a valuable lesson...IF I ever get back on that thing, I will properly fasten the helmet, and wear long pants!
I would be much better off with 4 wheels under me.
Damn, wheres the ice pack?

Don't let one accident scare you off. I bicycle almost everywhere I go, and have had a few serious to semi serious accidents over the last twenty years or so. I can understand about not going to the hospital as well. Once the chain gave way on my bike just as I was accelerating and I hit the pavement on a bike trail at about 20mph. Three broken ribs. After walking about five miles with the disabled bike, a park ranger came along and persuaded me to go the hospital. They didn't really DO anything for me at the hospital except tell me I had three broken ribs and send me a bill for $1,200.

My fat butt stayed between it and the pavement! Just another one of those "things mothers do for their kids".
Glad you are okay though, and don't let this keep you off the moped. Just think of how you can whiz by those gas stations full of SUV's paying an arm and a leg for gas...that should cheer ya up a little!

Egad girl, glad you weren't hurt worse. That's always been one of my greatest fears when riding - a blown tire. Now I wear gear in the hottest weather (well, 95% of the time ).
The road rash can really be nasty....take care of it and sending you Froggi hugs!

Yikes! I know how scary Moped accidents can be...and how painful as well. I'm so glad you're ok!
Mine wasn't nearly as bad...but just as embarrassing. First, let me say that this was the 80s, so I was wearing a nice pair of acid-washed jeans with huge holes in the knees....I was making a legal U-turn at an intersection and my rear tire hit some oil on the road. It slid out from under me and I layed it down. The pedal popped off the moped, and I picked it up and limped over to the gas station across the street...not a single person stopped to ask if I was ok.
So there I was, trying to screw the pedal back in, getting metal slivers in my fingers and getting more frustrated by the minute, when the gas station attendant asked if I needed to use the bathroom. I asked why, and he replied, "Cuz you're bleeding". I looked down and that's when I first noticed the killer road rash all over my knee, and the blood dripping down my pants and shin. Whee!
It took weeks to heal...and I earned the nickname 'Road-rasher' from a friend of mine...and why am I sitting here with an ear-to-ear grin at that memory?

Just glad that you are okay although suffering from some scrapes and brusies. I would encourage you to get bak on in a few days but do remember the helment and also make sure you watch everyone around you. Many peopel do not see riders on cycles and mopeds so you have to really keep your eyes open and always leave yourself an out. It sounds like you did not have much choice since a tire blew and you handled things very well. Once again just happy that you are okay and suffered little damage.
Have a good day and maybe get a little rest this afternoon.

Feel better, PLEASE...and hop back on that mean machine asap (after your son fixes the tire for you, though)

The way you wrote this has me chuckling but oh man, do I feel your pain of road rash. I'm glad that you were not seriously hurt nor was the moped badly damaged. At least for both of you - wounds will heal quickly (and inexpensively).
