I've always felt self-conscious that I'm a computing professional who doesn't really know what adSense, adWord, and Google analytics are. So I spent a few hours ummm... Googling those things and I became fairly aware of what they are and how they work. I've always been amazed that MatchDoctor can offer such a great service for free. There's no ads or advertising on MatchDoctor, so I've always wondered how they make money. I started to look through the MD page source (the "html source") and saw references to ads by Google.
"How odd", I thought. I see references to advertising on MD, but I don't actually see any advertising on the page!
It actually took me a surprisingly long time to figure out why I wasn't seeing any advertising. I use FireFox, the best browser on the planet (trying very hard not to disparage the piece of crap called Internet Explorer). I have two addons installed: AdBlock Plus and Customize Google. Both addons remove advertising, ads, click spying, etc.
Out of curiosity, I disabled both addons, restarted FireFox, and lo and behold, there ARE advertisements on MD. I'm looking at them right now: "Social Networking" and "Russian Dating Sites". Cool!
New thought
I have to admit there was a little itty bitty tiny doubt in my mind that LongRanger had a PhD like he claims he does on his profile. But after a most spectacular exchange (which I'll let speak for itself) I think it's safe to say he's a big fat liar. It's too bad the exchange put a damper on an otherwise neat blog, but seeing him shut down like that was worth it, I think.
I also believe his body type of "athletic and toned" is as reliable as his "doctorate". I also believe that he makes 150k+ as much as I believe his body type is athletic (notice he has no picture). He probably uses Internet Explorer.
New thought.
I'm meeting a coworker for dinner at one of my favorite NYC restaurants: the Sevilla. They're famous for their Mariscada with Green Sauce; it comes in a huge cast iron cauldron that almost looks like a conquistador's helmet. It's Spanish seafood -- European Spanish, not hispanic.
New thought.
School is starting soon: September 4. This semester should be easier than last semester. Stochastic calc was absurdly difficult with a full time job. It's supposed to be the hardest class in the program. Glad it's over with, but it's a topic I plan on studying for a long long time to come. This semester I'll be taking "Continuous Time Finance" and "Interest Rates and Credit Models". It's never easy taking classes and working full time, but this semester should be easier than last semester. I'm still anticipating a significant drop in time spent on MD, which sucks, because I love it here.
New thought.
OK. Seeing the advertising on MD was novel and interesting, but they're getting a little old. I think I'm going to go re-enable AdBlock Plus and Customize Google and restart FireFox.
Later!

I used to think Advant was the best browser until Firefox came out and WOW, It is THE BEST!!! I agree, can't stand Internet Explorer. Far as the Lone one goes, I would be very curious to see a picture as well as some proof of a degree. btw, I just got certified in CPR/AED last week anyone care to see it? LOL

OK, we have an exclusive on my blog here!
Cyn, that's the sort of thing you're supposed to blog about so all your friends can (virtually) crowd around you and congratulate you!
 Here, have that bloody Mary...
Now, about those kickboxing lessons.... I've been going to the gym 2-4 times a week, but I still want to take more kickboxing.

Oh come on, that's not blog worthy. But I will say I was the only one in the room to get every question 100% ahhhem, what a bragger I am. Anyway, I'd be just be asking for trouble, like as if no one's going to come on and say, hey can you practice mouth to mouth on me? When I pass the BIG test in a few weeks, I'll blog on it

I have to use IE... And I have to have my pop-up blocker disabled.
(work requirements. I network with a computer several states away for work and if I want to work for them, my system has to be compatible with their inhouse system.)
Oh, well.
By the time I'm in position to have my own computer with nothing on it except what I want as the best, I'll be so far out of touch that it'll be like... like...
Well, like I am now! (I still have a flow-chart template for writing COBOL around somewhere... don't know squat about HTML. Any HTML codes I want, I copy.)

You know, FF and IE coexist peacefully. You can have both installed and use IE for work and FF for casual browsing.
I do the same thing at work (unfortunately, the company I work for only officially supports IE, although most of our web services based product work just fine and dandy with FF).

I sometimes alternate between Firefox and Opera, which I also like. Opera sucks for some networking sites like Myspace though - it's very slow.
I'm amazed how you never lose the desire to continue learning. I wish I had your drive...and smarts!

Despite my promise to do my Swedish 2 1/2 homework this week, I will be working on it tomorrow. Last week's class reminded me of finding the Tinman in the Wizard of Oz. Yes, I creaked that much.
I can attest to the difficulty of taking a class and working full time. Of course, I'm not working on a degree or even a certificate, but I also write, so it is very stressful.

You convinced me...
I had the firefox just sitting there in icon status...
So I opened it and followed along your suggestions and ... Wow!
How cool... I think I will get brave and add some more "add ons"...
Thank for the great info..!

Thanks for the Ramblings.
I have in the past looked at the page source html looking for “post” variables. I used what I learned to write a Perl script for automated data gathering. It was for dictyostelium gene blasting as a Molecular Biology class project.
I use FireFox I may have to try some of the addons you listed.
To bad about the LoneStranger last I heard he was a geneticist. I am sure it is true based on his vast knowledge of evolution.
School starts August 20 here. They only have me scheduled to teach two nights this semester. One night will be on “normalization of microarray data using S+” as a hands on tutorial in the computer lab. I like teaching.
Thanks for letting me add my geek self-absorbed comments to your blog.
Keep on Rambling friend.
