I am considered a man of deep feeling, why? Among men, who is to judge which man has deeper feelings? If a man is adept at expressing their feelings, does it mean those feelings are somehow deeper than the man without such an ability? Who among us has a feeling meter and goes about measuring the depth of feelings? Does a man have less passion, who controls his emotions? We see passionate people daily. Often they are ones who do not well control their thoughts or emotions. Prone to outbursts of anger as well as expressions of love they are often the artists and poets, the fighters and lovers. Sometimes they are all four at once. Why are the most passionate love affairs also so often those which the most fiery arguments occur? Passion and unbridled emotion rule these relationships. Been there, done that.
Sometimes I have asked of a woman, "Are you romantic?" It never ceases to amaze me how differently each person perceives the question by their interpretive definition of the word "romantic". To me, the word is of a huge scope. Those who answer "With the right person I can be" have missed my point. Romance is a way of being, of seeing, of living. It is a way of life. Do you see the world in the light of hope and beauty and poetry, or is life to you, one of mundane existence? Is life about facts, figures, rules, regulations; or of the smell of honeysuckle and beauty of a rose. The romantic writers and poets help us define romance by their eloquent words.
Though women are more typically romantic than men, gender does not regulate the creative impulse. I know myself to be romantic but I also know the limitations of budget, emotion and creative capacity. I may be romantic, but I am not going to jump off a high precipice to prove my love or devotion. Then again , for pineapple upside down cake I might just jump. Geronimo!
