A hummingbird flew into my cabin a few minutes ago. It hovered against the fluorescent light, obviously confused and becoming more and more frantic like a moth in a flame. I reached up and carefully closed my hand around its small wings and it clasped my index finger with its tiny feet. Now passive, the bird allowed me to carry it to the front door where it flew from my hand. During the entire event, I never closed my hand enough to contain the bird. Once my hand closed enough to close its wings, the bird, as if acting on cue, closed them for me and sat still, perhaps exhausted by the exertion of trying to fly into the fluorescent light. It was a rather interesting experience. I am reminded by the song by Jim Post... "Catch a hummingbird in your right hand... LouEllen Rainwater, LouEllen Rainwater" Now I have the tune playing through my head. I like the sound of it. I am raising the volume right now. Pass the popcorn please.

What a wonderful story. I've held injured birds in my hand, but never a hummingbird.

Thats so neat. I loved watching the hummingbirds at my feeders. One time something happened to one of them and it was laying on the ground so we picked it up and took it to the vet. I know that sounds stupid, but I didn't know what to do for it and they were excited about having one to "fix". I called the vet the next day and they said it died on the operating table. It was just nice having something that tiny and beautiful in my hands for a little...thanks for bringing back the memory.

3 months ago I was at work watering all of the flowers we had set out to sell, a hummingbird flew right into the big picture glass window and hit the pavement. I figured it had died it hit the window so hard. I picked it up, (so tiny when you really have one in your hand) and just stroked its back. It opened its eyes, and just laid there in my hand for a few minutes. If finally got up and for about another 30 minutes just sat in my hand.... then flew away

Wonderful story Words. I love Hummingbirds too. They are such amazing birds. When I think about their migration it just blows me away the distance they have traveled. This story of yours reminds me of the day this summer I was sitting on the back porch talking to my daughter on the phone. When a Hummer flew up to feed on my flowers. It then flew up to me and hovered about 4 or 5 inches from me. It was amazing to look at it up close like that. He flew away and a few moments later did it again. Seems it was just as curious about me as I was him.
