Last night I went to go see Al DiMeola at the Blue Note. He didn't disappoint. Well... kinda. His 2nd to last song was Mediterranean Sundance/Rio Ancho (the first song off the famous "Friday Night in San Francisco". The 2nd to last song was something slow and not very memorable. I kinda wished he had ended the show on his well-known song.
But his playing was marvelous. What made it truly special was one of the musicians that accompanied him -- an Italian dude playing (hold on to your hat) an accordian. An accordian!
It was fascinating hearing melodies and harmonies that I've been so used to hearing on guitar, played on an accordian. For example, the accordian pretty much played all of McLaughlin's part on the Med. Sundance. Gave the whole performance a kinda "French cafe" feel.
Tonight is the first night of classes. I'm pretty worried. They look tough.
