If any of you are Jazz Fans you might want to known that one of our own passed on yesterday. A jazz funeral will be held soon. If you are going to be in the New Orelans area contact me for details and I will guide you there.
Here's the message from Joe Torreganno, the band leader at Harrahs.
When I got to the dressing room at Harrah's tonight, I was informed that Kerwin James, sousaphonist and our original bassist in the Original Royal Players Brass Band passed on Wednesday, 9/26. Kerwin had been ill due to a stroke in the late Spring of 2006. Kerwin and I worked together off and on for about 7 years, we toured Europe together, and worked at Harrah's together. He was considered by many the heir to the thrown of the late great, Anthony "Tuba Fats" Lacen. I'll always remember the last time I heard him play with the New Birth Brass Band for the 2006 French Quarter Festival. He and the entire band was on fire that Sunday afternoon. They had a groove going out of this world, and the largest crowd of any brass band that performed. Kerwin's career was cut short as he was in his mid 30's, but his music and his personality will long be remembered, and sorely missed. Joe T.
