For those of you who responded to my last blog with words of sympathy and kindness, thank you. For those of you who responded with jokes and humor; you gave me a chuckle, so thank you as well. By the time I had written the blog I had already taken the stitches out and had gotten the first bill from the hospital. The entire accident was never painful really. The RN asked me what the pain was on a scale from 1-10 and I said 3. The shot to numb my thumb for stitches was maybe a 5 and the tetanus shot which was supposed to hurt later that night, I never felt at all. I never knew I could be so insensitive!
After the fact, the left thumb which was cut half through is healing well. The scar is rather unsightly but I have full use of it. The right thumb which was holding a tire inflator tool when the explosion occured is not doing as well. It did not require stitches but became infected within days of the accident. The hospital staff did not clean that wound well and I had to reopen it and clean out some tire residue. The cut has healed by now but I suspect the bone was chipped on the outer part of the joint and it provides me with some pain. I do not have full use of my right thumb. Occasionally when I grip something it falls from my grasp and I find it very difficult to pick up small objects such as a dime. I suspect a needle would be out of the question.
Meanwhile, I have taken on what might have been a lucrative contract to paint murals on four sides of a 20 foot trailer. Of course it is on a strict deadline and being right handed, I keep dropping my brush. Adversity is said to be character building so I am thankful for the great opportunity being afforded me at this time. Most folks say I am quite a character already though.
Until next time...thumbs up!
...steve
