So...I been meaning to write this blog for a while now. I'm an avid D&D player, and several years ago someone released something that I can only really describe as hate propoganda about D&D players. For those of you who don't know, Jack Chick is a radical Christian that makes small pamphlets meant to be distributed to children. Simply put, the man's insane. He's claimed that the eucharist is a "death cookie," that dinosaurs were hunted to extinction by man, and the purpose of this blog, that Dungeons and Dragons results in witchcraft, brainwashing, and ultimately suicide.
Now...D&D players are many things. We're geeks, nerds dorks...but it ends at about that point. I'm going to post a link to the specific "Chick Track" about D&D. Read over it, then I'm going to basically analyze some of the more ridiculous things it says.
Dark Dungeons <--- Click
First off, in the first panel, we see more women playing D&D than men. That simply doesn't happen.
Second panel, a character dies. One character says:
Marcie, get out of here! You're dead! You don't exist any more! Now...for those unfamiliar with D&D, the players do make characters and yes, the characters can die. This is usually frustrating but not upsetting. And if a character dies, that player isn't ejected from the gaming group. They just roll up a new character. (Usually a more annoying one to get on the DM's nerves.)
The third panel implies that people that play D&D know how to use real magic. Now, it's not unusual for radicals to claim Wiccans and Pagans use real magic, but D&D users? It's a REAL stretch to claim that gaming dorks are so adverse in the occult that they can manifest arcane powers. Yeah...because you know, if I could cast real magic, something tells me that I wouldn't need a friggen' dating website.
The third panel also notes a contradiction. Panel one, Debbie's character was a wizard. Pannel three, Debbie's character was a cleric. Maybe she was multi-class. Or maybe she was a cleric...named Wizard. Which is just retarded.
Panel six, it basically looks like Debbi was suddenly swatted in the face with an ugly stick. This is more a reflection of Jack Chick's "artistic" ability, rather than the D&D analyzation...
Panel seven. Two hundred bucks might buy you two books and a pack of dice. -_-
Panel eight. People don't play D&D by themselves. It's a social game. At least three or more. Oh, and by the way? If you're fighting a zombie and it's kicking your ass that badly, you pretty much suck at D&D anyway.
Panel nine. more of this crap about the girl's character dying, and her upset about it.
Panel ten. Marcie killed herself. While it's not unheard of for a D&D player to commit suicide, it's not a reason. It's just a coincidence. D&D had a lot less to do with those deaths than being a moron kid with bad parents did.
Panel eleven simply makes me laugh.
It gets worse as it goes on. Eventually the ruggedly handsome slice of Americana comes to swoop Debbie out of her festering pit of magic, witchcraft, and implied homosexuality. At which point the creeper preacher dude that looks like Geraldo Rivera if left out in the sun for too long "heals" Debbie, and she's free to enjoy the bounty of heaven!
...yet for some bizarre reason is watching someone burn at the end.
Radicals shouldn't attempt to decipher things they don't understand. This is a hilarious example of someone making a huge misconception and attempting to poison other minds with it. Check out the rest of Jack Chick's garbage here:
Jack Chick: Poisoning Children's Minds Since 1965
Enjoy!

My brother plays that stuff. In fact, it's what inspired my thread in the R&S section about evil.

I played that once. It was fun. My character was a German (who knew ) and they made me actually talk in the accent.

* Gah! * What are you doing? Are you trying to blow our cover?!! People who read this might think that we fantasy/science-fiction fans are normal! Why they might even become interested in fantasy/science-fiction! We might even have to...deal with REAL people!
You leave me with no choice. Diceknight, I curse thee: Henceforth you shall be tormented by an irresistible urge to read the complete works of Terry Brooks!

D&D - much less damaging to children than, say,,,,,
World of Warcraft, Gangster Rap Music, Steroids, Being rewarded for "TRYING" in math, ADHD excuse for bad behavior choices, or eating the food in the school cafe. These things effect more kids, with much more negative impact.
All of these other dangers require no brains, no thinking, no imagination, etc. etc.
Face it, I played D&D years ago, (When it was called Chain Mail - and there were three paper back books only a 1/4" thick). The vast majority of kids smart enough to figure out the hit tables, the ratios, the monsters, etc., and then use their imagination to turn log tables into a game,,,,,, are too smart to think it is REAL.
For those people opposed to the game, let's roll up a charecter, give you the basic human fighter, and see if you can keep up. I know there are going to be one or two people with bad experiences, but to attack the game is the easy way out. Look deeper, and you will find some other cause of their mental break that was just manifested out in D&D.
D&D is not dangerous. It has violence, magic, and monsters. But then, so does Harry Potter, and the US Congress.
The imagination I developed playing D&D, helped mold my personality into an innovator, not a control freak. I look for creative solutions to problems. I don't just accept the status quo, or the tried and true. That's why 30,000 people call me their friend, and not thier "Boss".
These people should quit complaining about D&D, and go read stories of Camelot to some middle school kids. Become useful.

Haha, very well said indeed. There's really no better way to explain it than that.

The strip was too much!!! Thanks for the link and comments. Your frame by frame descriptions are great! I used to play years ago, yes a Nerd and proud of it. Now I just play Talisman an old British board games like D&D light, only three to five hours to play not weeks and weeks. People will make up what ever they want about anything they think doesn’t fit in with their agenda. Of course the rock music was included in the burn pile! Yikes! What’s next?
