So I am a puppy killer now.
I was driving home, it was dark, there were 2 cars facing me, one on each shoulder of the road with their headlights on. The speed limit was 45, I slowed down to about 30 to go between the 2 vehicles and then from out of no where a small dog came out from behind the vehicle on my right and directly in front of my car. I hit the breaks and probably got down to about 10 miles per hour but it was such a small dog. I immediately pulled over and ran to the puppy just to see it dragging itself off the road, it was so sad. I guess it was a Halloween party the family was getting ready to have, several peoples dressed in costumes. A man came running down and grabbed the puppy and took it up next to the garage where the family and friends gathered around and then I saw the guy take the puppy and walk inside leaving the others outside. I asked if they thought the dog would be okay and one of the guys replied that the dog was dead. It really seemed like maybe the dogs back legs were broken but it looked like there may of been a chance for it to live from what I saw. Yo intento a alto pero no es bastante, no quiero este pero hay nada puedo hacer. Yo siento muy malo.
I wonder if the man was taking the dog to the backyard to end the misery. I wonder why not take him to the vet instead. My sister worked at a vet and she would see some things all the time for instance one time these peoples dog had puppies and one was stuck and they told the vet to try to deliver the puppy normally but if it wont come out they will not pay for a surgery so just put the dog to sleep. My sister says this is not an uncommon attitude for them to see in the vet office. Our neighbors both past and present have dogs they just leave shacked up in the lanai all day and night with little to no attention, in the heat, stepping around its dog doings. Why do people like this have dogs? My dog I have had for 13 years is like my son who just happens to be speech challenged, he eats better than most kids, bosses me around more than I boss him around and sleeps directly in the middle of the bed at all times just allowing me to sleep along the edge of the bed. Maybe I am extreme in how I treat my dog but even so, surely people should by law have to care about their pets a little more than to throw away their pets life at the first sign of inconvenience.
Anyway, I ruined Halloween for those people tonight, the kids there will likely never forget tonight and nor will I. Tonight I have become a puppy killer and in this it brings to mind a quote I wrote long ago that no one seems to understand. "envy you for what you are, I do not. It is for what you are not that I find envy."

Can you translate the Spanish part? I took courses in high- school but forgot a lot. I thought alto meant tall? :)

I am the same way with my dog.She is my child, she sleeps in my bed with me.I would do whatever I had to do to save her.I have seen people leave their dogs run loose, they run in the road.I think that if they can not take care of their animals the right way they should not have them. I feel sorry for the kids, because their puppy got hit,but someone was not watching out for him when he got out.

I assume the meaning is something to the effect, "I didn't mean to kill him. I'm very sorry". :)

Don't be so hard on yourself. It was an accident and they (the owners) were negligent too. :)

Try not to feel too bad. It sounds like you did all you could to avoid the dog and you did stop to help, which is more than some people do.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad nite. Unfortunately, those people ruined their own Halloween by allowing their dog to run loose on a dark nite. I didnt check where you live, but Im sure there is a leash law. I know that probably doesnt make you feel any better, but its the truth. There isnt much you can do, except get on with life. Give your dog an extra treat, and an extra scratch, and know that you are being a responsible pet owner. Take care!

The people who the dog owned, they were Latin and I guess they didnt think I would understand what they were saying but should by some freak chance they see this, I want to make sure they understand what I am saying.
Yo intento a alto pero no es bastante, no quiero este pero hay nada puedo hacer. Yo siento muy malo. (I tried to stop but it was not enough. I do not want this but there is nothing I could do. I feel very bad.) Except I havent really gotten good with conjugation in past tense so I think mostly this was all said in present tense.

You didn't mean to hit the puppy, you did everything trying not to. Since there were quiet a few people around then someone should have been watching the puppy. Im sorry the children lost a pet tho. As for why people don't take care of their pets beats me. I can't understand why someone has a pet then don't take care of it. My 1st ex's mother had a cute Chinese pug, but she didn't take care of it. I was the one to take care of it when we were married. But a few months after we divorced she left the poor dog in the car with the windows rolled all the way during a VERY hot summer day .

Thats really sad what happened, it wasn't your fault but its still aweful. May the puppy rest in peace in puppy heaven.
I dont know either how some people can be so mean towards animals, or why they have them if they dont intend to treat them with love and kindness. I guess I'm "extreme" (how you put it) about my puppy/dog too cause she's my baby! And as others have said I'd to do anything to save her. - AsH

Very sad,,,but don't blame yourself.....another way to look at this is you might have saved that pup a long life of hell...if these people didnt take the time to watch it now ....Just saying ,,,,,one never knows for sure.....But I do think things happen for reason we will never understand. Don't be so hard on yourself ,,,you tried the best you could.

Although you probably feel terrible about the incident, they should have had the dog confined to the yard. I won't even let mine go out to the bathroom with out walking her to the pen to go. She has a very large pen and has plenty of room to roam around when she is in there. The only time she can enjoy the whole yard or the lake is when I have her on a leash to avoid those kind of situations. It was just as much their fault as it was your (if not more theirs). You got out and tried to tend to the dog and I am pretty sure you apologized so don't beat yourself up over it.

You are not at fault for anything. The owner of the dog is responsible for everything about the dog, including letting it get into traffic. Dog is Man's best friend, but Man is not always Dog's best friend. And I wouldn't get too sentimental over one single unfortunate animal. Ask the local animal shelter how many they put down every year.

I understand that they shouldnt of let the dog run around at night and in the street. Its still an unfortunate accident and I cant help but feel bad about it. And the kids there, they probably loved that dog the most and understand the least. I know the animal shelter puts down dogs all the time, I guess the thing is, I dont put down dogs all the the time, not something I care to get in the business of.
Thanks everyone 4 the support.
