This weekend I went camping with friends to the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta. (Brandon Island state recreation area) I'd printed off some tide charts before we left and am I ever glad I did... but reality would have been almost as useful. On Saturday when we put into the water for our first paddle of the day, we were immediately pushed upstream about a mile to a mile and a half per hour. It gave new meaning to "go with the flow." Knowing we were being pushed UP the river, was disconcerting to say the least... but what goes up, must come down so about 4:30 the tide began to turn. Heading back to the park it didn't look as though many people were CATHCHING fish but a lot were trying. Some boy scouts were out working on their Sea Scout badges. Just a nice lazy paddle where the river did most of the work.
My only wish was to have gone for a paddle as the moon came up but paddling alone is a no no. I'd much rather go for a paddle than to sit around playing cards or dice but *sigh* a good guest I try to be.
Sunday we packed up, cleaned up and drove up to Terminus on Highway 12. If you're into kayaking, Georgianna Slough is a good one hour up and back paddle. Lot's of birds, interesting houses and some amazing views from low on the water.
