Blaming Fighting Joe Hooker for the term "hooker" is a base canard, an insult to an intrepid American soldier. Hooker, meaning prostitute, was a common term in London before Joseph H was born. James Boswell (1740-1795), in The Life of Samuel Johnson, calls prostitutes "hookers." Given that here's an attribution that predates Hooker by AT LEAST 65 years, I'm inclined to believe that it's an apocryphal tale.
