Union Gen. Joseph Hooker commander of Army of the Potomac, during Civil War is responsible for the name of “hookers” being given to prostitutes

Hooker was one of the most immodest and immoral of the high Union commanders

Once in charge, Hooker's headquarters were roundly criticized by many as a combination of bar and brothel. When he launched his campaign against Lee, Hooker swore off liquor. This may have hurt more than it helped..

Popular legend has it that his name was permanently attached to prostitutes from his Civil War actions in rounding them up in one area of Washington and taking them to the base for the soldiers.

I cannot comment on the validity of this information:

Blaming Fighting Joe Hooker for the term "hooker" is a base canard, an insult to an intrepid American soldier. Hooker, meaning prostitute, was a common term in London before Joseph H was born. James Boswell (1740-1795), in The Life of Samuel Johnson, calls prostitutes "hookers."

Given that here's an attribution that predates Hooker by AT LEAST 65 years, I'm inclined to believe that it's an apocryphal tale.

Most etymologists now dismiss the General Hooker legend, but still cannot pinpoint the exact origin of the word:

Stop complaining napa. You know where I got all of that information. I am sure your busy little fingers found it online in Hooker's biographies.

They did call those women Hooker brought to the Union base as Hooker's Hookers.

If there were women called hookers in the book "The Life of Samuel Johnson", where they were calling prostitutes "hookers." in 1740-1795, I am sure that our souldiers had not heard of that before. So do not go that route.

Actually I have read "The Life of Samuel Johnson" and I have a copy of the book and do not recall the term hookers in the book. Give me the page number where it is in the book, IF YOU CAN.

Do not refer to Snops in my blog. I do not believe Snops' crap.
