Quotes from American Music Therapy Association Web Site:
"When we look at the body of evidence that the arts contribute to our society, it's absolutely astounding. Music Therapists are breaking down the walls of silence and affliction of autism, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease."
"Simply put, music can heal people."
"Music helps all types of people to remain forever young."
"(Music therapy) can make the difference between withdrawal and awareness, between isolation and interaction, between chronic pain and comfort -- between demoralization and dignity." I think it is safe to say that music does, indeed, bring some form of comfort, feelings, emotions, healing to everyone. And I would bet each of you reading this have fond memories of some music.. I do.. it was broadcast this week that Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" was written for Caroline Kennedy. He told the press that the inspiration came when he saw the sweet girl standing with her pet horse and the words seemed to pop into his mind as if wished there.
Sweet Caroline Lyrics -- Neil Diamond
Where it began, I can't begin to knowin' But then I know it's growing strong Was in the spring And spring became the summer Who'd have believed you'd come along.
Hands, touchin' hands Reachin' out, touchin' me touchin' you
Chorus: Sweet Caroline Good times never seemed so good I've been inclined To believe they never would But now I, look at the night And it don't seem so lonely We fill it up with only two.
And when I hurt, Hurtin' runs off my shoulders How can I hurt when I'm with you Warm, touchin' warm Reachin' out, touchin' me touchin' you
Sweet Caroline Good times never seemed so good I've been inclined, To believe they never would Oh, no, no I have my own memories of that very same song. When I was 16, I started dating my first TRUE AND HONEST love, Jerry. It was funny how that came about, we were both dating other people and on a double date with those other people. When it came right down to it, neither of us couples were fitting well with the people we started with, but we braved it out and the next day, I got a call from Jerry. He asked me out! What I witnessed while he was with my friend (and it was a first date for both couples, so there was no feelings or emotions yet tied in) made me hope that he would call. We were very much parellels of each other.
8 months into our dating, for my December birthday (my 17th), Jerry (who everyone said resembled Abraham Lincoln [me thinks it was his magnificent sideburns.. baby boomers.. you remember them.. yes?????]), Jerry came to pick me up to go out to eat in a stove pipe hat and tails he rented, with flowers. He walked me to his car, helped me in and sat in the seat. He gave me a beautiful necklace which I still have, and turned on the 8-track (again baby boomers.. can we get an OOOOOHHHHH RRRRAAAAHHHHHH?). The song he clicked to was none other than Neil Diamonds Sweet Caroline and he sang along with him while putting the necklace on my neck. After the song, he leaned in, took my face in his hands and said.. "I couldn't have captured you better .. I am not that good, but they are what I feel you are and why I love you."
Jerry died 5 months later.. music still heals me .. especially when I get down about a relationship I thought could work, but was shut down. I heard "Sweet Caroline" today and I felt a breeze blow my hair... I was inside and there was no wind.. but I know full well what (who) it was .. telling me the same thing he did those many years ago.. and close to both mine and his birthdays (our birthdays were only 4 days apart, though he was 4 years older).
So tonite.. I leave off with.. "good times never seemed so good."

Music has always moved me emotionally. When a song comes on that has a memory attached, my mind goes back to that place.

OMG Luvs...I'm covered in goosebumps from my head to my toes. What a tragic loss of love and life.
Your blog is beautifully written, as usual, and suddenly I was a teenager again, feeling all of those emotions. Yes, music brings lots of memories to me...old and new. I not only consider the "essence" of the song, but the lyrics, as well. Sometimes I'll cry to a song and my daughter will turn it off. I turn it back on and tell her..."It's cleansing...let me continue".
A kudo for you, m'dear. ~*~*~
