A Navajo Indian and his friend were in downtown New York City, walking near Times Square in Manhattan. It was during the noon lunch hour and the streets were filled with people. Cars were honking their horns, taxicabs were squealing around corners, sirens were wailing. The sounds of the city were almost deafening.
Suddenly the Navajo said, "I hear a cricket."
His friend said, "What? You must be crazy. You couldn't possibly hear a cricket in all of this noise!"
"No, I'm sure of it," the Navajo said, "I heard a cricket."
"That's crazy," said the friend.
The Native American listened carefully for a moment, and then walked across the street to a big cement planter where some shrubs were growing. He looked into the bushes, beneath the branches, and sure enough, he located a small cricket.
His friend was utterly amazed. "That's incredible," said his friend. “You must have super-human ears!"
"No." said the Navajo, "My ears are no different from yours. It all depends on what you're listening for.”
“But that can't be!" said the friend. “I could never hear a cricket in this noise."
"Yes, it's true," came the reply. “It depends on what is really important to you. Here, let me show you. "
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a few coins, and discreetly dropped them on the sidewalk. Then, with the noise of the crowded street still blaring in their ears, they noticed every head within twenty feet turn and look to see if the money that tinkled onto the pavement was theirs.
"See what I mean?" asked the Navajo. "It all depends on what's important to you."
Anonymous So what is important you?? We're not talking money (although that is something to think about). But we can apply this to almost any part of our lives.
Are there things in your life you are "not hearing" because of all of the other noise around you?
Just something to think about.

not crickets
very nice story!
It is important to be in the present. One of the reasons why I will not use a cell phone in the presence of other people or in public.
I have an affinity for Hawks, Falcons and Eagles. I like to go to Central Park in the fall and look to the sky - I always see many soaring in the sky. Most New Yorkers wouldnt know to look!

I know exactly what you're saying about "not hearing" things. I've been there in my life. Think we all probably have, and sometimes still are. We get in a big rush, a hurry to go about what we "think" is important at the time, but in the big picture of life as we look back we realize all too often that those things weren't the most important.
I've had a lot of serious health issues, so for me health is the most important. Without that we can't give of ourselves totally and take care of those around us we cherish. Health and Family are on the top of my list.
Great blog and a kudo

Oh Lani, I just knew you were full of special stories. Thank you SO much for sharing this one with us -- FOR us.
Every day I'm reminded of the "crickets" and other things that I've tuned out in the cacaophony of daily life...but it only takes a little trigger to bring back the "crickets" and the sound of a smile.

Excellent blog! The most important thing in my life is to remember to put God first in everything. I look to Him for guidance and direction. I want to follow His will, wherever it takes me. It is important to show compassion and empathy towards others and to treat others as I wish to be treated. Silence is golden to me. Silence, not only for its own merit but the silence that allows me to "hear" the special things. If I stay still long enough, I will even be able to hear that still small voice inside of my heart and soul. This is a good silence. My health is very important to me, also, as are the friends I have. They are as valuable as gold for me and I am grateful for each one.
