Why does it ALWAYS have to happen on a weekend?
Why can't it just freakin happen on a Wednesday for example? Or a Tuesday?
I have a large tree in the front yard, and every year and a half or so, I have to have the sewer guys come out and clear the roots out of the main drain from the house to the street.
Symptoms of this pain in the butt include no functioning drains in the house. It has never backed up and overflowed, as long as we basically halt the use of any water in the house as soon as it is noticed the drains aren't working. And of course, after 12 years of being in this house, and having the sewer guys out every year or so, you'd think I would have a pretty good chance of it happening on a Wednesday. But NOOOOO......Every stinking time it happens either on a weekend, or a holiday. And so we have to wait.
The rooter guys should be at the house any minute now. Maybe I can begin to whittle the massive pile of dirty dishes down when I get home this evening, along with the laundry. I most assuredly have my work cut out for me when I do go home.
I was thinking too, this morning......I wonder where all that "gray" water goes? I mean..........we flush, rinse, wash, and drain all sorts of things down a drain. Think about that a minute. Take a moment, and just think about all the possible drains there are in your immediate vicinity. And then sort of just imagine all the different things different businesses and private residences put down those drains.
Good grief. Everything from all sorts of cleaners and soaps, conditioners, scrubbing stuff, silver polish, liquid plumber stuff....bleach, dye, oil, grease, blood, spit, not to mention tons of well...you know.....and the paper that goes with it. How much toothpaste is used everyday? That has got to be hard to get out of water. Spit and toothpaste. So...like I was thinking......Here in Casper, I assume it all goes down my drain and out to the street to a bigger pipe, and then somehow, miraculously finds it's way across town to the "treatment" plant. Treatment? What if everyone drained something at the same time? Would there be a tsunami of yuck at the plant? Does it all meet up at the plant at the same time? How the heck do ya treat that? And then...what? Into the river? Is that where oceans come from? That's a lotta "stuff " to go into a "treatment" plant. Even for a town as small as this one. I know I contribute daily and hopefully, without fail, and I suspect the general population does as well. It really is mind boggling. How do they know they got it all out?
And then I move one step further, and ....well....take New York City for example. Every restaurant, apartment, gas station, business, .....my goodness.... And think of this! Every tire on every vehicle wears out. What? About an inch or more? Of rubber tread.....where did it go? Every single tire.....an inch of rubber.....worn out. That is a funny way of saying we are leaving the rubber as dust on the highways and byways.....which, when it rains.....sometimes finds it's way down a drain. How do you remove rubber dust from water?
Rubber dust. I like that. Hmm.... Wonder if it bounces at all when it settles..... Wonder where Budweiser gets all it's water? That is a lot of water, but I have never really tasted rubber in it. It doesn't taste all that good but I don't think it's the rubber. I like Guinness anyway. Coors gets theirs from "Pure Rocky Mountain Spring Water." Wonder where that comes from?
Ok...I am getting a headache.
So I guess now, I am going to feel pretty good when I get home tonight, and can comfortably use the water supply that comes into my home, and conveniently ignore where it all goes when I am done using it.
It is good to be an American, ya know?
'Course.....even non Americans use water I guess....what do they do with theirs when they are finished using it? Are we all really just ignoring it? Really? Wow....
Oh well.....can't wait to get home tonight.
I need a shower and a shave. Maybe I will boil some ravioli tonight.....just because I can. And have a cold Beer....I hate Coors.
Oh...and please all you Mr. Knowitalls and Mr. Fix-its....I really don't want any answers to those questions I asked. Save yourself the time and trouble. I do appreciate your concerns however.
It's just that...well....
I just don't care.....remember? It's too much to think about. Somebody else is just going to have to worry about all that. I got dishes to do. Don't you?

It drains into America's sewage treatment plant, Texas....
Might I suggest a Pacifico?

Tunes - my drain went up on Christmas Eve several years ago! It had to be replaced! WHat made it worse was that somewhere along the way - I hired a "cheap" Plumber to fix my sump line and he ran it into the drain. Of course this cost saving move does not comply with code.
It was pouring down rain and I have to rent a pump to take the water from the sump outside on the lawn. I couldn't leave the house for 4 days as the pump would burn up if the sump emptied out. So I couldn't run water - flush a toilet or leave the house!
It is called
Murphy's Law!

Oh...and please all you Mr. Knowitalls and Mr. Fix-its....I really don't want any answers to those questions I asked. I just can't help myself,,,,,,it's a compulsion.
Water down the drain goes to the treatment plant. First it goes through a bar screen, to remove large particles such as femine hygiene products, contraceptives, and paper not ment to go down the drain. (This is where my watch went probably)
Then it goes into a tank, where little bacteria know as BUGS as introduced. The Bugs are used to break down organic matter, and the process is speeded up by the use of aireation and aggitation. (A giant blender with air nozzels at the bottom).
Once the liquid is cleaned of organic particles, it goes to another tank called a clariffer, where the solids drop off and the clear water on the top flows over the edge to be captured for further processing.
A little chlorine and hydrogen sulfide are introduced to kill off any remaining bacteria, and then it is sent out of the processing facility to a river or stream. In some cases, it is sent to a drinking water plant.
The drinking water plant gets it's water from either the sewer plant, or a river, lake or deep well. The water is pulled through filter media (A big cheese cloth) to take out sediment particles. Then it goes through another set of filtering media, where flourine (for your teeth), and chlorine (to kill bacteria) are added. Then it goes into the water distribution system.
Note, in the entire process, nothing is done to treat chemical contamination - as dillution is the solution.
So, to answer your question,,,,,, all that gray water goes into your faucet.
Enjoy your raviolies.

As I have inspected a great number of commercial and private dwellings I have found some extreamly well engineered, home grown "gray" water system. In our local the waste authority is under the gun to come up with an approval process for it, particularly since we have a lot of folks that see the future shortages of water coming all too quickly. There are a number of web sites that talk about how you can build your own, but it is ESSENTIAL that you learn the difference between gray and black water system. Once you get past that, you can cut your water consumption by well over 65% a year and put what you use to a lot better overall useage. This really should have been considered as part of the national plumbing code decades ago!
