Today, Sacramento County (California) has enacted a law that on poor air quality days, it's illegal to burn, woodstoves, pellet stoves, Dura logs or any other form of combustible heating materials Between December 1 and February 28/29.

While I dislike driving through an area that has ground smoke as thick as fog, I dislike freezing more. I know many people who only have wood heat in their homes who are now hard pressed to come up with 10K to retrofit their homes with central heat or buy space heaters for every room in their homes.

Just this week, three homes in Sacramento have burned down because of space heaters... not to mention that space heaters are rarely energy efficient.

I hope no one freezes in the name of cleaner air (which I'm not against). My vote would be to encourage more car pooling and using public transit more instead of restricting the few who use wood to heat their homes.

That's just freakin' crazy, is this their way of trying to kill off the poorer people by forcing them to freeze to death in their own homes? Jeesh! Seems like a form of popluation control, not air quality control.

As someone in CT freezing with 30 degrees can't imagine not being able to use another form of heat for your home. Pollution is bad, but the cold is far worse.

Okay Blue that does it I am on my way!

What about gas logs in the fireplaces. They are clean and efficient and not to hard to change.

I lived in Korea and they burn bricks that leave a covering on everything, way up where I lived in the North and on the 12th floor it was terrible.

Actually, burning wood is much less efficient for heating your home than gas (or even space heaters), and the pollution here has been unbearable this year. As a person with lung issues, I welcome this wood burning ban and look forward to being able to BREATHE this winter.

Wow! Down here in Sonoma and Marin Counties, south of you, they won't let you put in fire places in new homes or add one to your home. But if it is already there, you are free to use it. While the government is burning up our hard earned dollars (taxes) why don't they go over to your house and burn it in your fire place, is that legal?
Very sad indeed
