This is not directed at either of the two people who posted this joke.

It is directed at the message of the joke.

I am really tired of people poking fun at mental illness, especially bipolar and schizophrenia, like it's a comedy act, or something funny. Unless you've f***ing lived with it or have a close relative that lives with it (your friends don't count, sorry), shut the hell up about it...because you KNOW that if I posted a blog called "A Cancer Patient's Christmas Carol" and said:

"I'll be full of radiation for Christmas" (not that I EVER WOULD)

Everyone would be down my throat.

There's the hypocrisy. Believe it or not, mental illness is NOT funny, and suffering from it is even less funny. And yeah, I do suffer from it....and NO, I'm not going to keep it to myself, because if I had cancer, I could talk about it and talk about it as much as I wanted and people would always be there to support me.

Indirectly, without meaning to, those who laughed at those jokes who don't have any connection to mental illness were laughing at me, because I do exhibit some of those classic "funny" behaviours.

Sometimes, there has to be a line with humour.

I think you miss the actuall benifit of the jokes, they give some people an idea of what these terms actually mean.

My sister is schizophrenic, and for a while I was her caregiver. However, I believe that the greatest benifit of these jokes is, as I said, they do inform people as to some of the meaning of the terms.

One can read them as they please, and the way they read them will be commensurate with their mental ability. Not posting them would not change that.

You are right about mental illness not being funny. My Dad had alzheimer's before he died and that is a certain form of mental illness, and you are right its not funny

I too suffer from a couple of different mental disorders but have learned that if I can't laugh at myself then there really isn't much to laugh at. If the humor is done in general then it's not much of a problem for me, it's when it's personal - that's when there's a problem.

You have your right to be offended and I'm sorry that you were, but I'm sure that no harm was meant with the jokes and it definitely wasn't meant to be personal.

I am sorry you were offended at others sense of humor. At one time, I worked as a nursing assistant in a nursing home that also cared for some residents with schizophrenia, and I know where your coming from on this. Its a sad fact that people will laugh at what they dont understand. Mental disorders are a frightening thing, and Im sure they meant no harm. I myself, never saw the joke, nor do I want to, but I apologize for them, and hopefully they will see that what they see as funny, can be hurtful to others. Kudos to you for taking a stand!

People need to understand that Mental Illness can and often does kill a person. It is serious.

We all suffer with some kind of disorder or challange. Some jokes should be only amung friends who are there to share your ups and downs.

My friend's song is: "I'll be hairless this Christmas, That's why I get Santa's hat, you'll have pills, enjoy no frills, but together we will be."She went on from there but as her FRIEND I was laughing too hard to get the rest. Heres to you Anne!

And heres to you LGQ!

Have a blessed holiday!

I'm sorry if I offended you LGQ.
I promise it was not my intention
and in no way was it aimed at anyone.
Regardless, it was a dumb joke. Sorry.

Living with it or not, it's just a joke. It's not as if it's a harmful insult to them.

However I do believe this...

"If you got a joke that you can not tell it in front of the people that it talks about, then you have no right to ever say that joke to anyone anywhere else" - Carlos Mencia.

I did not see anything wrong with it as a joke. We have jokes about everything. We all saw someone we know in the joke. I saw my mother in it and it did not bother me. She does not know anyone or where she is at but is in good health.

I feel like cartay25, if we can laugh about ourselves and at ourselves what is there to laugh about.

I guess we all have our own views though, hun

While I totally understand where you're coming from, let me play devils advocate for a moment here.... awhile back there was a certain blogger here who posted a blog that was not only offensive, it was tactless.

Those who are friends with this blogger, laughed it up, yet others were deeply offended. When they stated they were offended, the others told them to get over it, it was simply satire or dark humor.

My point is, people should really think about what they find acceptable and funny - just as the mental health jokes were offensive to you, so was the the other blog I mentioned offensive to many folks, yet you were one of the adamant defenders of this bloggers so called satire/dark humor. jmo

IMO, people who "poke fun" at any sort of mental illness are simply uneducated....well they are not educated in the least about mental illnesses. I agree with you, it's akin to any other illness & it is very serious...regardless of what KIND of mental illness it is. I believe society has come a long way in understanding depression, bi-polar disorder & many other types of mental illness, but there is still a long, long way to go.

applauds to your blog, lip

mental illness is not a funny issue at all

i suffer from anxiety and depression since the 1990s after suffering from vertigo
good days and bad days i have, i have to fight on, pray on and soldier on
like from THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, there is the line
"get busy living or get busy dying, that's goddamned right!"

gotta go out living my life and have fun
think pluses and no minuses

I didn't read the post you're referring to, LGQ, so I can only comment on your comment.

In one of Homer's stories (I don't recall which), his men saw a hunchback and they struck him in the hump with a staff, then "laughed uproariously" as tears welled up in the poor man's eyes. The people who find humor in jokes about things people cannot change about themselves are just as insensitive. They are insensitive to the point of cruelty. Instead of chastizing them, perhaps we should realize this is just a defect of theirs and hope they get the treatment THEY need (or at least lessons in humanity).

I agree with you, Queen, but you also must be able to laugh at yourself. First, my second husband is bi-polar so I lived with mental illness for eight years. I have a first-hand knowledge. No, I am NOT suggesting people make people with mental illnesses the butt of every joke. That would be wrong on so many levels. Second, I have cancer. It's not funny. But you can create humor in any situation. One of my fav jokes is about the guy who was told by the doctor, "I have bad news and good news." The guy asked what the bad news was first. The doctor said, "You have cancer." He said, "Well, what is the good news then?" The doctor said, "If you have to have cancer, this is the best kind to have." That is EXACTLY what I was told when I was diagnosed with cancer! I heard this joke months later and laughed and laughed. I applaud you for dealing with your illness straight up. I know you can never be "well" but I wish you much happiness and health in the coming year. Merry Christmas and you hang in there!
