I wrote this as part of a letter I mailed today and thought I would share it here as part of the historic representation of my life. I write this blog as an exercise in writing somewhat as a diary. I listen to what people write back to me because it helps to clarify my ideas and communication skills to do so. As I receive mail in response to my blog I develop new friends and relationships. Although I have only met a couple of you in person, I still count you as friends. So thank you for reading and for writing back
In 1971 I started out working on the varityper and press, in a print shop, in trade for a place to stay in the back of the shop. People asked for sign work so I did that as a sideline. I grew to like that more so I asked around and learned enough from sign painters to learn to do it. At first, mostly I did repaints for businesses and the small township in Ohio where I was living. My dad had a friend who was a signpainter in Colrado so I moved there and did some subcontract work for him. In the early 80's the sign industry moved to vinyl cutting of letters. I bought one of the earliest computerized plotters but never really enjoyed that type of work. I continued to paint signs and when that slowed down I added murals to my portfolio. I have always enjoyed woodwork so I like to make log furniture (mostly for my own house). A few years ago I made some carved pizza slices about 30" long for a pizza chain They liked my work so I started doing all their signs... then some murals...then some decorating... then some construction work. Lately I built an entire restaurant near Bella Vista, AR for them including all the signs and interior murals and decor. They have a list of projects lined up for me so I stay busy with that company most of the time. I have a shop where my son sells car tags for me but sales are slow and people just don't seem to have cash to spend these days. I may close the shop shortly. Meanwhile I still have my big U-Haul truck which is painted with murals and I will continue to set up for craft fairs and art shows and sell tags from that. I am also working on a small concession trailer which will be able to fit in smaller spaces to sell from. steven
