My roomie Chris and I have been engaging upon a discourse about conversation and how un-necessary alot of our daily banter has become. My first indication that there is such a thing was during my recent employment as a bar manager in Brooklyn. I actually had to resign this position temporarily because I couldn't tolerate the bullshit coming across the wood. I enjoy a good story like anyone else- but long gone are the days when I could find entertainment the stories of self-absorbed talkers, as they talk about the good ole days. But anyway, the other night- I went down to Flaggler to a dinner party, and I thought, to discuss business. We were chilling on the balcony and enjoying the breeze, when my hostess thruned to me and said, " I couldn't believe that I introduced Chris (my roomie) to Conrad Hilton and he didn't even know who he was!" The Breeze died at that moment, and it became cool outside. Mabey it was the fact that dinner wasn't actually prepared yet, or mabey it was because no business was conducted on this evening. What I know to be certain was that I didn't know what Conrad Hilton looked like either. That sent me to thinking how unnecessary that comment was, but also how unnecessary the whole evening was- I obviously had nothing better to do than be impressed by off the wall name dropping conversation- you got it- unnecessary. Or then again, mabey Chris and I got it wrong. This style of doing business seems to be the norm around here, and I for one am sorely un impressed.
