So I sit here at my desk that I've had for the past 6 1/2 years. The same desk at the same organization for a period of over half a decade. I've met some amazing people working here... some determined and caring individuals. People who do make a difference in other people's lives. The work that I am apart of has to have tenacity, dogged determination, and a very hopeful heart. A heart that has faith that IT can change the world one small step at a time.
And what have I learned while I've been blessed to be a part of this not for profit organization? I have learned that we aren't fighting for people we don't know, we're fighting for the rights of our family...we're fighting for the rights of ourselves.
We fight for the rights of people with disabilities. We partner with other groups fighting for the same people, the same rights, they are our family, too. I have realized that everyone in Tennessee, everyone in the United States is going to have a disability someday. Some individuals are born with a disability, some aquire one due to an accident or an insect bite. Some will be diagnosed with a mental illness. If we are lucky to get through the first part of our life without having a disability... we still have it to look forward to. Some will lose thier vision,. Others will deal with loss of hearing.or loss of mobility. Some of us will lose control of our bodies and some of us won't always have control over what we remember... or what we don't.
We are all going to be touched with a disability someday. It is inevitable. I'm thrilled to be working with a community of people who want to be sure that we are safe when we become disabled. People who are fighting for funding and human rights for people with disabilities. Organizations that help us keep our dignity and self respect are invaluable.
I've learned that who I help everyday could easily become me and I'm happy to be a part of the solution both short term.. and prayerfully long term.
