I was driving around town this afternoon and finally saw one of the local homeless guys walking down the road in the snow. He is in his early 50's and has a long white beard that could be a scarf. I stopped the car and hollered out to him from across the road to come over.
I bought a $20 coffee credit card for him a few weeks back and was trying to find him. He always has a friendly word and not a mean bone in his body. If he is around and can see anyone needing help carrying stuff of shovelling sidewalks he always offers to help.
He is obviously educated but something must have happened in his life as he can't process complicated situations anymore.
Anyway I rolled down the window and gave it to him and told him how much was on it and it was logged in the computer as Keith homeless because I didn't know his last name.
His reaction made me feel great!!! His eyes lit up and bugged out like a little kid on xmas day. I swear he almost jumped in the air and clicked his heels.
He said "Really, I can get hot coffee with this? At the fancy store?
I told him "Yes, anykind you like."
He told me that it was the nicest thing anyone has done for him in years and thanked me. Then he asked me if he could go and try it out right now.
I laughed and watched him practically skip down the road in the ice and snow.
It wasn't much, but it made a difference and made me feel good. It was like getting a xmas gift myself.
So, if you get time, even if you go down to the thrift store and buy a nice warm coat to give to some unfortunate stranger this year, please joy and feel the joy of giving this holiday season.
Cheers Poetessa
