...Most of us aquire a few new tracking cookies every day. We pick them up much like we would pick up any germ or bug in the real world, by contact with various objects or places or folks.
...These cookies and also a long list of trojans, viruses, and other internet "spies" and "thieves" are capable of everything from catering the ads on the page to your interests, to redirecting your searchs and links to "similar" sites set up by them or in agreement with them. This is all a grand attempt to funnel your business (your money) to their crony's sites.
...Frequently these sites also contain ads, especially "drop down" ads, for PC Repair products. Already annoyed by being redirected and slow performance, you are tempted to try the product "Free of charge". You download software and scan your computer with it. Lo and behold it finds "serious" entries demanding immediate attention. When you click "Remove", a prompt appears reminding you that this is a free trial version, to remove the bugs you must purchase the product.
...The kicker is, many times, most times, the bug was planted there by them in the first place.
...Since these bugs can be acquired anywhere, everyone is equally in danger while in the course of normal surfing.
....However people who surf for porn run an even greater risk. The same system is employed except the user is constantly redirected to a revolving series of "Top Lists", that may or may not have anything to do with the picture or link they actually clicked on.
....Once the virus takes hold, the incentive to buy the virus removal product is even greater, since most people don't want random pornographic images to appear for their spouses or kids on a typical Google search, for instance.
...In other words they use the guilt associated with improper or illicit behavior, coupled with their bag of internet tricks to syphon money out of the wallets of the poor lonely wankers who fall, unwittingly, into their trap.
...There are actual free programs to assist you in the legit removal of these annoyances. ATF cleaner, SpyBot Search and Destroy, LavaSoft AdAware, PC Tools Antivirus and Abexo Free Registry Cleaner, to name the ones I use on a daily basis. Each seems to catch a few the others left behind, so all together they provide complete protection.
...Many IP's offer free software to subscribers also.
...So don't fall victim to internet version of the "Three Card Monty".
...Be aware of, and know how to deal with, Virus Psychology.

Good post.

A coworker used one of those "tools" and messed up her registry to the point where the computer needed professional attention.

Hallelujah, we have a winner !!

A lot of these parasites come from seemingly harmless websites too... I have banned my niece from using any of my computers. I don't need (or want) screensavers and 'free mp3's'. She was the 'kiss of death' when she used my nephew's computer to search movies and times. Somehow she agreed to a one year contract (at $99) with an online movie showtime & review provider and allowed them to install their software. It rendered his computer useless. A large 'nag' window appeared over the top of all the other applications demanding you contact them, pay their fee and enter a code to remove the nag. It was the worst form of computer extortion I have seen.

I found a few forums that complained about the tactics of that company and how difficult it was to remove. My nephew tried Norton and SpySweeper but it didn't come off. He had plans to reformat the drive anyway... this was the perfect reason.
