I read a delightful Tiny Tale this morning about winter life for the local furballs that inhabit a certain 3 Acre Wood, overseen by our beloved Matchdoctor Squirrel Lady. Her Tiny Tales are a fun and satisfying read, and the work she and her semi rotten other half does is remarkable. They make quite a pair, those two. How he snagged her is beyond me, but that is another blog entirely. I will say this......he must have some possibilities hidden somewhere deep down, and I think that must be what she sees. After all, she sees the possibilities in her critters, why not him?

So I am reading this morning about all the furballs and other creatures who are roaming around their domain. And reading of the struggles of those Tiny Tails during the cold days and nights. And I start to feel like maybe I should try to do a little something for the ones that surely must be hanging around my backyard. Like it's the season for giving and all. Maybe I should buy some birdseed or biscuits or whatever your supposed to buy. Maybe I could attract some pretty cool birds or bears or something.

I already have a birdfeeder. It is even hanging out in the yard, from an angle iron off the back of the porch. I hung it there so the empty seed shells wouldn't end up on the chairs and grills and so forth that are on the porch, making a another mess I would have to deal with. I got enough of those as it is, without creating another.

Yeah......so I think I'll go to the store, buy some stuff, and fill the birdfeeder thingy. It hangs out there, swinging in the cold breeze, empty, and somehow sad.

Now that I think about it, I know why the durn thing is empty. I hate it. Not because it's a birdfeeder, or because it's always needing to be refilled, but because during the summer, I bash my bald head on the damn thing while mowing the lawn.

Every week.Year after year.
It gets me every time.
No matter how much I concentrate.
I will purposely mow under it first, while I am thinking about it, and then later on, as I go over the lawn one last time to make it perfect....bam! SOB!!! I take an angry swing at it, of course not ever meaning to actually hit it, because it is metal, and would just cause another bloody contusion. It probably has blood on it right now. Scalping me every week. Damn thing.

grrr.....

Why not move it you say?

What? And let it win?

No freaking way.

I just leave it empty.....like...I'm somehow getting even by not letting it do what it was created to do.
But it is wintertime now. And it is the season... I need to forgive and forget. Well, forget that it hates me....I don't want to forget that it is hanging out there at scar tissue level.
Maybe I should buy a helmet. Nah....that would be giving in.
I think this summer will be the summer I will finally win. I think I have a good attitude about wining next year.
I will go to the store today and buy some stuff to put in it, and let it enjoy the season too. Let it give and provide, as it was designed.

I'm feeling a bit of Joy coming on.

I do

Lay off the eggnog, Hon...

Go get some nutkin mix for the wee ones, and while you're out, check out the Viking helmets at your nearest TOYS IS US (or Wally-world, whichever is nearer). If they have one in your size, get it. Next summer, before you mow, have a couple of beers, put on the helmet, and think of the birdfeeder as a seagull - or a pelican - just another obstacle on the high seas to be avoided at peril of sinking and going to an early Valhalla...

...and now for another swig of Christmas Ale...

Oh yeah, and one of these: ~*~

Maybe you should just take it down during mowing season? Fix its little red wagon and put it in a dark place for a couple of months. Rehang it by the Winter Solstice (today), when the furry and feathered would most appreciate your generosity.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

And I'm not even drinking eggnog.

I think about Sci often now--I'm even feeding the squirrels on my little acreage.

Funny, I was thinking about writing a blog about her, my squirrels, and ....stuff.

You beat me to it.

Brilliant piece!

Try talking to it (other than cussing), or making a pact? If you were the bird feeder, just sitting there, through the whole winter, out on your own, would you blame yourself for having just a tiny bit of fun and interaction ? Ever seen birds there ?

ok, let's kiss that head better

I'm not near as furry as these critters Thomas, but I am damn cute. I haven't figured out what I did to attract this angel, but whatever it is or was, why ask why? I just thank God every day that I did.

Oh, if it's hanging, leaning, vertical or just there; I'm bound to fall on it, it fall on me or run into it, usually resulting in contusions and bone breakage...Don't feel alone.

Creating or maintaining a backyard habitat has been and is one of the most enjoyable things I've ever experienced. One doesn't need to go as far as administrating to the sick, orphaned and injured wildlife to enjoy the gifts these critter of all species so freely give us. People who do; like Sci, are in my opinion angels amongst us, but sitting amongst the fur and feathers on a winter day, one tends to forget the demons and dragons life often presents us. It is truly a blessing.

Now, if you'll excuse me, think I'll go grab some buttage....human buttage.
