There is a depth of thought and spirit within each of us. It is said that ""Still Waters Run Deep". Perhaps most of us (by necessity) live our lives too fast. I have been by this world's standards at one time wealthy. I have been homeless and without money I have sat on street corners with the homeless, conversed for hours with drug addicts and prostitutes and entertained congressmen and senators. I find people interesting in their diversity of culture and attitude. I have found most of all, much untruth in this world. People do not want to hear the truth when it disrupts what they have been taught or have come to believe about themselves, authority or religion. I am amazed at how hard people hold fast to their misconceptions simply to justify alcoholism or drug abuse. Other vices are no exception.
I know a man who is brilliant and well educated. He has access to quite a bit of family money, so he has a certain amount of power. I get irritated by his constant criticism of those about him who are not as intelligent as he himself is. His ridicule of them is always behind their back. I suppose it makes him feel bigger to do that. I have tried to talk to him about it but he disregards my opinion because I do not have a doctorate in psychology. (Herein the lie that only educated people with credentials are intelligent) I suppose if I did have one, I could roll the certificate into a tight roll and smack him in the head with it. Actually I do not feel it would do him much good though. But if I had my certificate in Brick Laying UH HUH a big, well placed brick might get his attention more quickly.
When I was young I hung out with a certain state representative. He really liked my work and my creative outlook on life so he was always insisting I hang out with him and his friends. He took quite a few trips across the midwest and most of them included as their primary focus, pick-up bars and discos. At first this had a certain appeal but the deceptive and plastic lifestyle was not something I could really get into. I could not stomach the lie.
Today I see people all around me in service positions with big companies who regard their position as "only a job". It alarms me. I do what I do because I love doing it. When that changes I will change jobs. Actually I have done that several times in my life. A few years ago a survey of Americans showed the top phrases we hate are "I only work here" and "that is not my department" IOf we hate those phrases, why are they so common among us? If more people would do what they enjoy and are truly talented at they would be happier and quite possibly more productive. But they believe in the lie..."I have to get a job to be secure"
It might be safe to believe the world is flat. Some people wisely insist there is more to it than that.

Well said! Great Blog. I myself, have worked a lot of different jobs "just to get by", but I now have a great job that I enjoy very much. I know a few people who could use your brick laying certificate!

Unfortunately, too often it is as the old saying goes..."You don't know what you got til it's gone."
That could be a job, a partner, our environment, even our common sense.
And once you lose the latter..many important losses can REALLY occur.

once again why imagrants seem to make it in this country.. Smile there are always people who think they are to good, smart over-educated for the job.. Hey I work with brilliant people a lawyer, a cpa and many others who areincreadable at their jobs many speak several languages.. Guess what we are all teachers.. I LOVE my job and for the first time feel like I am doing ok in the money department too.. But what do I know.. I am from a poor working class family who had to work hard for the money.. I work hardish but no where near what I have done in the past for less money..
People need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps or the blizzard is going to freeze em to death...
