Celebrities who have passed in 2007! Passed what? A cop whilst driving too fast? Then where's Paris Hilton's photo in that line up? She passed drunk many miles back and then passed the speed limit and passed on developing common sense too. Where is she?
This trend of saying "passed", in regards to persons who have died, is not only personally offensive to me, but it's uncouth according to the usage of the English language, whether American or British; and whether proper or slang terms are applied. I cannot imagine why people put up with it.
"My grandfather passed." they will say to me. And I'm waiting to find out if it was some sort of medical test or is he one of those inspirational grandfathers who you read about when they go back to college and make a success of their elder years? He passed his driver's test? What?
Kidney stones pass; painful as it is, it's a good thing, as kidney stones are something you want to get rid of.
You pass bowel movements.
People shouldn't be some filthy offal, some painful crud, that you are glad to see go. So why is the same term being used for them as for those other aforementioned functions?
Do the words "I shall not pass this way again" mean nothing? They didn't pass, they weren't accepted to anything, and they certainly were not excreted like some great smelly turd that was clogging up the world.
They did not pass: they stopped passing! They passed through life and then they passed away . from life. .. so they were done passing. The passing was over, when the life was.
They are pushing up daisies!
They have kicked the bucket!
They, according to some person's beliefs, have joined the choir eternal!
Unless their death is something you are callous enough to celebrate or inhuman enough to count as good riddance to bad rubbish that they passed is a wholly unfit thing to say.
I'm past passing by comments on passing and letting them pass. Not that I shall inflict further pain on the recently bereaved, but I am absolutely no longer willing to put up with that sort of brain-washing madness in the media.
It's a saying that helps to strip away our humanity.
