Are you planning to have any "blackeyed peas" or "smoked jowls"? They are telling me it is good luck. I am not so sure.
I may have some "black eyed peas" but the "purple hulled peas" are tastier and for over a year now have been available at Wally World. How could a "black eye" be good luck for anybody, anyhow?Bless their little pea pickin hearts! Who picks on those peas anyway? Bullies!
As for "smoked jowl", I will have to pass. Why can't they just eat pork? The meat makes a terrible smell when rolled in cigarette papers and lit. I just don't see how people can stand to smoke it. The smell is almost as fowl as smoking turkey!!! And who can say it is really good luck? The contributing pig would argue if he could! I better start hoofin' it towards the kitchen for breakfast. I may fix myself an omelette. That should give the chickens something to squawk about!
What are you doing today? steve

The year I did ALL the so called correct traditional things was the worse year of my life so far. So none of that here . I'll be grilling steaks with my youngest daughter and her husband. I'm cleaning and just enjoying this day! Happy New Year.

Sauerkraut and pork is the standard German tradition in our family. It is said that it is supposed to be a sign of good luck when the odor of the cooking sauerkraut wafts through the house. Funds are low until I get paid so I will have whatever suits my fancy. It looks like spaghetti made with ground turkey meat. It is better than nothing. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, I usually go to the coast. I went for Thanksgiving but had to get some new brakes so that set me back again. That is O.K. by me. It has been pretty cold here and I do not have chains which are required to go over the mountain passes. I am going to have a quiet, laid back, and meditative day and probably get some things done in my apartment. It is back to work tomorrow. I hope you have a wonderful peaceful day. I would like to read another poem if you can whip one up.

My own mom must have influenced by German tradition though she came from the deep south. I can remember meals of black eyed peas with sauerkraut though I do not remember the smell "wafting" so much as "stinking up" (a kids perspective)

Wafting is a polite poetic-type term, I guess. I remember times when it would get quite stinky, also. Dad used to grow his own cabbage in his garden and then put it in a crock to ferment into sauerkraut in the fall. We would have it New Years day along with a pork roast. Yep! It used to get pretty stinky. Nowadays, I just buy the crisp sauerkraut in the jar or sometimes the kind that comes in a plastic bag. I do not like mushy sauerkraut! I guess the main point about the tradition stuff that I was trying to make, is that I don't need to depend on a tradition per se to help me with the good luck thing. The good luck thing is more of a spiritual mindset these days. I know who my creator is and that He is there for me no matter what day it is. I also believe that the choices we make in our lives directly affect what the outcome will be. That is why it is important to make good choices. I am still a work in progress. When I make mistakes, I fall, get up, dust myself off, and keep on putting one foot in front of the other. I just hope that the "hill" doesn't get too steep. That is the time I have to "give it up to the Lord" and say "You do what you want." I know everything will turn out all right. There is peace in that.

Who knows why, but I soaked & cooked my blackeyed peas AGAIN this New Year. Maybe it's because I make them with plain country ham & eat ham steak with them, along with cabbage, that I never get any of that "good luck." Oh welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!
