I thought this was interesting... Relating to my previoius New Years traditions blog, one of my sisters knew more about the background involved with the New Years meals.

She wrote:

The black-eyed peas are thought to bring wealth because they look like coins, in addition to the fact they swell when cooked--a sure sign of prosperity.

The turnips and greens are considered lucky because they
look like greenbacks--money!

Ham is considered a source of abundance because it is rich in fat.
