Today I visited a humane society, and a local dog pound.
I was amazed at how many people were there spending time
with a pet they may adopt. Not sure if I know what type of dog I
am looking for. It's only been 3 months since mine has been gone.
My last dog, he was the runt of the liter, came over to me, and next thing
I knew he was home with me for 13 years.

Well, this part was difficult. They asked me male or female?
Type looking for? As I walked up to her cage she just raised
her head enough and looked up at me. She had charateristics/markings
in her face of a beagle, but body of australian husky?
She is 2-3 months old, found abandoned. So she was still a pup.

We walked around this area. she surely likes to play, and chew.
I am not looking to replace my pal...but to have another pet to love.
I have placed a 24 hour hold on her. I would like to get her, I have
an good area for her to run (fenced in yard). Lots of love to give.

Am I not over my other pet? I have definitely grieved
losing him...We were best buds! His picture is in my profile.
Just... unsure...appreciate your feedback.

I don't think the sex of the pet is important.
What matters most is that it goes to a good and caring home.
You obviously qualify in that department.

I think that if you went looking and put her on hold then you are ready for a new dog to love. No animal will replace the one you lost but you seem ready to share your home again and give another deserving dog the love and affection they need. I agree that the sex doesn't matter but maybe a female would be a good to help you get past the feeling of "replacing" your lost friend.

I lost my 15.5 yr old best friend last year in May. I can relate. It is good to ask the question. Ask it of yourself as you go to sleep tonight and ask for the answer. You will awaken with the answer that is right for you. What is right for one person is not necessarily right for another, but the Truth is in your heart.

Blessings!

I feel that if you do decide to take her home, you'll never regret it...If you made the step to go looking, you're ready...go get her.... (I've had males and females, all were sweet in their own way...I don't have a preference.)

Finding a pet is a lot easier then finding a 'mate'
This is between you are her. Lay on the floor with her or whatever you like to do and see if you can let her into your heart. She will let you in, dogs do that. But be sure you can open your heart for her for the rest of her life.

If you can...you are both blessed.

I just lost my 15 plus year old 3lb yorkie Scooter, a few days before Christmas. I am not over losing her by any means...I miss her more than I could have ever imagined I would...she was my shadow...went everywhere with me including to the doc, shopping whatever...I still find myself reaching out in the nite to see if she is covered by her blanket...silly some say, it was just a dog...to those people I don't acknowledge them for they don't know the meaning. She was not 'just a dog'. She was a companion, a 'good' friend, and always knew when you had a bad day or were not quite feeling well and she would try her best to comfort you, too. She had huge love in a very tiny body. I was always a 'big dog' fan, having labs and rotties mostly in the past but this little dog didn't take too long in stealing my heart. I loved that little dog and miss her dearly.

For you, I agree with what Lacy said. When you lay down tonite to go to sleep ask yourself the question and when you awaken you'll know the answer. Seems however, you are ready to accept a new friend into your home and your life, just based on the fact that you visited the humane society and put the hold on her. I also agree with the statement that the sex doesn't really matter, although I have always found that female canines are easier to train :).

Good luck with your decision and whatever it is, I would be willing to bet it will be the right one for you and the dog!

Working with Dogs for many years, I know a 'bit' about this subject.

The first thing I read which is good.. is that you seemed to connect.. thats a huge start!.. Many people have tried and failed to bond with dogs who really aren't that interested. There really has to be something that you instinctively feel.

Another clue to how yoy feel is .. Have you thought up names in your head?.. if you are.. then youre already there!

A younger dog will obviously need more time devoted to it.. feel free to read my Puppy blog.

If you do indeed take this special pup home.. I wish you good luck and a lot of love and fun between you in 2008!

Bless you for going to the Humane Society and dog pound. There are way too many dog and cats that need homes.
I am going to go tomorrow (if they are open) to get a playmate for my lab/dane mix. I had to have my Blue Merle Great Dane put down the week before Christmas (she had wobblers). We miss her so much!
But I feel like a few of the others that have commented here, male or female doesn't really matter. They all need love. I hope to let Tess pick out her new playmate.
So good luck with your new friend

No other furry friend can replace one that is now on the other side.

I, personally, have lost furry friends and it hurts. They are members of the family. I cannot imagine not having a furry friend in my home. Each one is different and they all need love. It sounds like this special angel needs your love. Only you can decide if the time is right. I have had male and female furry friends and it has never made a difference to me. I love them all.

I can relate to what you mean and how you feel for I too lost my short legged beagle of sixteen years last fall and it's noway they can be replaced, they are like family. I have a pic of my lil Darla (beagle) on my desk and she was as smart or more so than some people. It's good you decided to get another pet for they all need love just like we do. Good luck with the new pup!

Looks like most all are in agreement... The sex of the dog doesn't matter as long as you and the dog connect.. You obviously did.. Take her home and enjoy her She can never replace you old pet but can help mend the wound left from losing him.. Plus you can mend any trauma she may have faced while abandoned.. It seems to be a win win situation..

You can go to Purina and take a survey about what type of pet is best for you, large or small active or layed back.... but I think you will just KNOW if she is the one. And boy or girl does not matter.

I never had a chance.... Rufus grabbed onto to my heart, bowled me over like a freight train going a thousand mile an hour.... I could not leave him. I walked out and tried to walk home and kept turning around..... I could not even leave him over night. I went back told them to hold him long enough for me to go to the bank and get enough money from my savings account and walk back..... I thought I would not make it till I could get back for fear someone would take him before I got back.

IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT! Rufus has never been away from me for longer than a days work, never overnight even when he was operated on for a bad hernia and spayed (same operation). I did not sleep for two days in order to watch him, so he would not strangle on his vomit or saliva. He was a sick little guy from the hernia operation. He was only 6 months old..... MY LITTLE LOVE!

You already know you are ready!

I work at a shelter, and we usually tell potential adopters to take their time and not choose too quickly. Sometimes it even seems like the dog chooses them! It's so cool the way people will come in thinking the know EXACTLY what type of dog they want, then walk out with a totally different one when they fell in love with it's great personality, gender notwithstanding. My old therapy dog was a cute little ratty 30lb dog, and when she died I knew I wanted another small female dog. 4 months later I ended up with an 80lb male behemouth! This new dog was SOOOO cool I just had to have it for my pet therapy. He's still with me 5 years later, and we love him to death. Of course my clients love him too,he has such a goofy personality. We were also thrilled that he turned out to be totally housetrained! Added bonus there. So have fun, take your time, and your dog will be there ready when you are!

You can't replace your the dog you loss, but you can bring a beautiful smile to you and to your new pup each day.

I firmly believe that the dog, cat, critter that is meant to own you will let YOU know.. they pick us, we don't pick them.. as it should be.. they speak to your soul.. apparently this one spoke to your soul... Congrats on a new member of the family.

I lost my dog Rambo in September 2007 and at the time thought I might not get another one, Well the cat and I were so sad that I started to look for a new dog on a couple adoption sites, but couldn't find the right one. My girlfriend said when you see that face you will know its the right one.
Well I opended my heart a little and this new dog just wiggled into it. Before my Rambo was a male with us two females now we are an all female household. I still do miss him a lot but Amber is slowly winning me over and I won't give her back now. Both my dogs pictures are in my profile along with the cat.
One thing I am learning is how to handle a 2 year old dog again I forgot how to.I am also finding this dog to be very kissie type where Rambo wasn't. Believe me after a week so so you will so happy with your choice.

Good luck with you new dog.

I think that my Fred who was stolen about 20 years ago comes up in conversation at least once a month. When I meet a friend I haven't seen for a long time he is reminisced on by them having associated him with me.--almost like a mate--funny how that works. I just had to put my good boy down after 10 years and even though I have 2 others that I am not as close to I still miss him. (as I would if either of the others had gone) Mine always do seem to find me--they get dumped off at my house or people that thought they wanted a pet but really weren't ready know I am an easy mark --sorry for rambling but it just felt good relating my feelings to someone.
Get the dog--you both need it.

I've always had cats.
I've never "replaced" a cat with another.
But when my heart told me I was ready for a new pet, the right one always came to me......and I just KNEW.....
Good luck.
