I sat at my desk gazing at the past years chalkboard. A slate filled with indecipherable scribbles, notes, smilies, exclamation marks, frowns, sighs and tears....I finally got up and wiped the whole thing clean. Taking the shortest, fattest piece of chalk, I wrote 2008 across the board and beneath it, the word 'GIVE'.
Give, the one thing that every human being is capable of and the one thing that is capable of changing the world. It is one of the most powerful words in the English dictionary....or any dictionary in any language. The act itself is a gift we give ourselves. We all know the goodness wrought from giving unselfishly. The sweet, deep down pleasurable joy that pastes a lingering smile on our hearts. A sneaky little smile, that unbeknown to you is caught by a passing glance, that pastes a grin on someone Else's face for no particular reason except for the fact, that goodness is contagious.
I witnessed much giving this past holiday season. I, in fact, was a recipient of many unselfish gifts large and small. I witnessed scores of people going out of their way in the form of time, money and personal effort to give to those less fortunate, so that they might experience a little joy and goodness. The pure act of being a witness, was a gift. I am blessed to be surrounded by many giving people who rally year round to give to others...to make our corner of the world a better place.
On a larger scale, it made me think of our soldiers in the armed forces, at home and abroad and........yet another poem was born.....
Soldiers
I honor those who countries fought to slaughter and dismay I pray for those whose heads that lay on padded bricks and stone. To soldiers hearts far from home, that deep of night, cry all alone who give to all not just their own honor, values, virtue honed The strongest knifes the weakest blades come together to carve in stone, "God Bless America" May all come safely home.
