I dunno...I find Little Britain to be the funniest thing on the face of the planet, and my friends don't even get it.

Very good points! As you said, the countries have different shows on. We HAVE had much more foreign based comedy lately. But, it could be we are "primed" by what we watch!
My Dad thought Benny Hill was hilarious, and I thought it was the dumbest thing I ever saw! (sorry Benny Hill fans!)
I LOVE comedy! But more real life based: 2 and a half men, still standing, King of Queens

I love British humor! I got hooked on a few shows, Ab Fab, Keeping Up Appearances, there was another show, older, about a British prison, can't remember the name but I loved it and of course, Falty Towers. You Brits definitely spare no one from your humor. About 2 months into living in England I received a text message from a new friend, Dave. It was the weekend that the Pope passed away and Prince Charles married Camilla. This humor is not unusual for the area where I lived, the message read: Hey Dee, whodda thought that the Pope and the Prince would both be stuck in an old box on a Saturday night. I about fell over from the shock at the irreverance, but had to admit it was funny.

The English are the only people who seem to be amused by attacks on their own country. The Irish are supposed to excel the English in humour; but it is a fact that English audiences in the theatre are diverted by sarcastic attacks on the English, whereas it is physically dangerous to try a similar method on an Irish audience!!
As for Camilla.. most Britts cant stand the woman!

British comedies are some of my favorites. I especially loved; Yes Minister, Fawlty Towers, My Family, Bless Me Father, Good Neighbors, and Monty Python. However I never got into the slapstick of Benny Hill and never found Will & Grace worthwhile. American comedy sitcoms I found terrific include; Barney Miller, Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers, and Friends to name a few.

Yes.. Fawlty towers was a huge success probably because of John Cleese an ex Monty Python. The man is just a genius in comedy.

American humor is more direct and in your face more of a non thinker type of humor where the Brits to get their humor make you work for it what I call a thinking mans humor more understated than direct, bring back Monty!!!

Sorry about misspelling Fawlty. Now, if we're talking Uk humor Billy Connolly, the Scottish comedian is an absolute hoot, don't you think?

Oh yes! Billy is espcially funny because he makes fun of real life situations and doesnt just stand telling learned jokes.
The Prison series you were thinking of.. was Porridge. Porridge is what the English call thier 'Time' in Prison because it was commonly served for breakfast.

The genius of Monty Python, especially the movies, is that it crosses cultural, generational and intellectual boundries. You can't mention, for instance, Search for the Holy Grail in a bar without having a group of people (that may not even know each other) fall into silly voices quoting thier favorite lines. Humor is esemplastic.

Waiting for God is one of my favorites along with Fawlty Towers and Keeping Up Appearance. AbFab is awesome. Wish most of my favorite shows were on in the evening.

I love "Keeping up Appearances" and "The Vicar of Dibley".....I wish they were still making both of them...as I've seen every episode multiple times!!!
I do believe though, Charli, that you are correct.....we do have different comedy "styles"

Some English have said that the American humour is not quite the same as ours.. The Americans tend to laugh at more slap stick type of humour.. as the English tend to prefer the dryer more inuendo humour. If that's still true, then I'm glad to hear it. I've been afraid that American slapstick is taking over the world. The English sophistication may have to do with the fact that England was an aristocracy for a long time: Court intrigue, hidden insults, veiled threats. Plus the need to maintain class separation without actually saying so. America was more democratic, and and humor tends toward the lowest common denominator. But I never saw anybody who could mix up those extremes so well as Monty Python.
Rule Britannia!
