The red bird sits upon a fencepost
and sings his lonely song
He sings a song for his mate
when will she come along?

He has so much to give her
it breaks his heart in two
affected so by sadness
he turns from red to blue

the scarlet of the tanager
turns to indigo
tears swell within his heart
til tiny droplets flow.

When redbirds cry upon the sky
mockingbirds will mourn
and in some way when lovers play
every heart is torn.
