Last night was an interesting one in our little burg. It's been raining all week. Because we're just about flatlanders, when it rains all week, there's no place for the rain to go but to spread out. Not a problem for people who've lived here for 20 - 30 a hundred years but for people who aren't familiar with the roads, it presents an intellectual challenge.
Since Monday about noon, it’s rained over 5.5” inches. I’m not sure how much more because the rain gauge was overflowing when I got home last night… and I wasn’t going out back to empty it.
We have an Indian casino about seven miles up the road. Last night they were featuring a 70’s band so the roads were packed with bay area drivers, out in the country for an outing. Unfortunately the main road in was closed about 7:00 last night so our adventuresome drivers from the bay area, looked for alternate routes. Soon the monitor alerting our local VOLUNTEER fire department began paging everyone for public assistance to pull cars and people out of ditches and fields they’d floated off into.
The most interesting was a Mercedes SUV that was on a road so far out in the boonies (trying to get around all the flooded road closed signs it turns out) that they’d floated off into a local creek. Because they had Onstar and cell phones they were able to contact help, even though they were under water (that’s a tight car!). I was just glad non of my sons are currently fire department volunteers.
Their consequences… their vehicles were left and the passengers were shuttled to the casino so the casino could deal with their wet dripping personages… but I wonder. Does insurance cover stupidity?
This mornings news showed so many cars that had floated off into the ditches that the sheriff’s impound yard should be full up tonight.
Do you have a story when non locals put themselves in danger because they didn’t have enough common sense to turn around and go home?

During the 80's, I was attending school in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I lot of people were moving there from all around the country.... The job market was better there at the time....
During snow storms people would just jump out and leave their cars in the middle of the road because they couldn't drive on the snow and ice....Made it pretty dangerous... Funny part of it is Colorrado Springs is at the base of the Eastern slope of the front range...Still the flat lands of the prairie....

It's not just the locals. People just don't want to believe it when they are told they can't get some where. I guess the SUV learned a lesson huh?

I often wonder how people smart enough to make the cash to but a 75K vehicle can be dumb enough to think that the vehicle is amphibious?
When it snows around here, we get the brave souls out there doing 15 m.p.h. - when say 50 is appropriate. People will say they go this slown in the name of "safety."
I wonder how safe they'll feel when they get rear ended & their trunk is 4" away from their head lights?
If you're going that slow - it ain't worth it
- stay home.
