... I asked rhetorically....
Just lost another friend tonight, allegedly He was plopping down $700.00 on a pair of cuff links and considering buying a $1,000.00 straight razor.
"Did you buy my book yet?" I asked him.
He told me that he was too busy going through his "sexy beast" obsession and it doesn't do to have too many obsessions going at once.
I reminded him that he told me that if I ever got a novel finished and published, he'd buy it right away.
There was a short bout of him saying things which were selfish but I no longer cared about and me saying "Fine" because I wanted him to shut up, and then I told him I have no more room in my life for people who make promises and don't keep them. He took me at my word and never spoke to me again.
Now, mind you, if a friend were having a hard time in their life, and simply could not do as they promised, that would be a very different matter. But, anyone who can spend $1,700.00 on self indulgence, can spend $19.95 on keeping a promise.
I have room in my life for people who are willing to give what they are willing to get, and vice versa.
I can give honesty, love, loyalty, a listening ear, time, presents that I can afford and want to give, the truth, my thoughts on various matters, sometimes a reason to smile, devotion, self sacrifice, and going out of my way to make you happy. But, if you won't give the same to me, don't promise it, and don't expect it in return.
Because if you promise something, you better keep to your word .. or keep out of my life!

i dont know why they get so upset. But you are right, they do. I never fail to keep my promises and i have no time for people who do. Friends dont make promises they cant keep.

Sad that people are so selfish in some ways, yet not selfish enough to hold onto the really good people in their lives.

Thank you for the comments.. especially Miss Choos, who gave us a fine example of the fortitude necessary to be the sort of person who keeps promises, by her stunning display of aerial comment maneuvering !
I really liked the other comment, too, though, because I never got that either. It seems like a selfish person would want to keep the people who are going to freely give their time, lend them money, bake them a cake, help them when they need a babysitter, etc. But those are the people they really screw over and abuse, mostly.
Weird!
