It's often said that those who talk about my generation forget who raised it. But tonight, I'm talking about my generation, and I do know who raised it. I often wonder though, if all this is their fault, or if my generation are all stupid f***heads because of the media and the rise of the internet.

What generally got me started on this was a rant to my friend about how much today's music is vapid and devoid of any real emotion. I don't know how many of you listen to today's music, but basically it is covers two things: dancing and f***ing. Dancing and f***ing, dancing and f***ing, dancing and f***ing. Oh yeah, and then there's emo. But you know how emo music is. What I basically said was that real music died with Kurt Cobain. And I mean that. The music that we hear today can't compare.

Anyway, from that stemmed this long rant about my generation.

The generation that raised my parents busted their ass for the war effort. They fought in the war, and those that didn't sacrificed EVERYTHING for the war, even if they didn't agree. They busted their asses, in general, to give their children and their grandchildren a better life. They didn't complain about shit. They just did what they had to do. THAT is why they are the "greatest generation". They actually FOUGHT for what they believe in instead of being like me and sitting behind a computer and bitching about it day in and day out. They went out and they defeated Nazism and Fascism in Europe and brought down Tojo in Japan.

The generation that raised me and many of my friends, even some of you, busted their asses not only for a war, but fighting AGAINST a war they didn't believe in and a draft they felt was unjust. If they didn't go and defend our freedom in Vietnam, they got up and busted their asses every day to protest it and get their voices heard. They voted for candidates they believed would represent their points of view, instead of sitting at home and saying "What's the point, my vote doesn't count anyway". Veterans came home horribly scarred from war, but provided for their families nonetheless. Women fought for their rights, gays fought for their rights, and blacks marched and fought relentlessly until they won their rights. It was inevitable: the voice of the young people was heard with help from people like Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King, and The Beatles.

When I look around at my generation, what do I see? A bunch of fat, lazy assholes who complain every time they have to get off their asses and do something. A bunch of self-entitled jerk offs with an elitist and cynical attitude about their country and their government. They refuse to vote if they cannot find a candidate they agree with, yet refuse to fight for change. They refuse to protest the war, and leave that to the older baby boomers. The women refuse to get involved in the feminist movement. The blacks refuse to speak out about racism. The kids have no respect for their elders. They don't give a shit about themselves or anyone around them, and they scrutinise everyone based on their outside. They refuse to find common ground with anyone, and they get lost entirely in the lives of celebrities instead of realising what they can do to change the world around them.

On Wednesday, I was sitting in History class when this morbidly obese pizza-faced jerk walked in wearing a shirt that said "Strippers Love My Pole". He sat down and began to complain about how much he hates History, and then started to brag about his sex life and how much he loves to get drunk. I literally turned around and said:

"You know...I spend half my life trying to defend community college as a legitimate institution to my family and those around me, and here you are sitting around bragging about your probably non-existent sex life and talking about how much you drank illegally last weekend, all the while complaining about how much you can't grasp the simple concept of Reconstruction. You're just proving me wrong. You are a lesion on the ass of humanity .Fall off the world." He called me a fat bitch, and told me to shut up.

If the fallen heroes of past generations like General Patton, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King were to come back to life for one day and roam the streets and cities that are named for them....I think they'd all assassinate themselves after they looked into the faces of the teenagers and young adults they fought for, and what they have become.

A culture is a representation of a people and what they will tolerate from one another. The culture of my generation is a wasteland....it is garbage. I don't see how anyone can look at this culture and be proud of it, much less defend it. When there are starlets going in and out of the hospital daily, porn stars running for governor of California, and people spending more time talking about actresses who weigh 120 lbs and wear a size 10 looking "fat" than they do talking about an unnecessary war....there is a problem.

There are exceptions to this rule. Many people in my age group are blossoming. These, I believe, are the minority....and that is what is sad.

I really and truly fear for my generation. They are a shame to the great ones...the World War II Vets, the women of World War II, the Vietnam Vets, the Hippies, the black rights activists, the feminists, and the gay rights activists who fought long and hard for everything that they are flushing down the toilet today.

I'm more worried about the baby boomers than I am your generation. It seems senility is setting in for some of them. That many people all losing their mind at the same time can't be a good thing.

It's refreshing to hear this from a young person. Usually you have to sit around with the retired crowd to hear it. the fact is, though, my generation started the "spoiling" of children. today we see the results. I have hope though. Every generation has been accused of going to hell in a handbasket. yours won't be the last.

Sorry LGQ, but with people like you, Tracey, and Mikal, I'm not at all worried about your generation. The country's future is in good hands.

Young Lady you ROCK ~!!!!!!! you can actually SEE the Im entitled attitude that much of the younger generation have grown into... OMG did I just say younger generation?? I remember being called that being looked down upon and not wanting to fit into that category and working my ASS off not to be ... I might not have much but I have worked hard for all I have and I have taught my children the value of hard work and how much they themselves are worth in this world and how not to let their main assets themselves depreciate and fall to ruin

Sorry....I don't agree.

I've seen your generation, I've served and fought alongside your generation, I've bled with your generation, I've been saved by your generation and I've watched your generation die so that others might live. I've seen the commitment your generation has for their friends and comrades. I've seen the honor, the sacrifice and the unmitigated bravery that many of your generation display and perform with nary a thought....while you may not agree with the circumstances they occurred under....I'm extremely proud to have served alongside those of your generation and will continue to do so when called upon.

Hey LGQ .... you're over looking one thing. As much as you pretty much nailed everything you ranted about just now ... there's just ONE THING.

.... someone had to raise "our generation" and taught us what we knew. Some of this pretty much falls on the generation before us.

The generation that raised me and many of my friends, even some of you, busted their asses not only for a war, but fighting AGAINST a war they didn't believe in and a draft they felt was unjust

A pitiful MINORITY of us did that for most of the 10 years that Vietnam dragged on. And then it seems that most of us just forgot it, and now here we are in Iraq.

If your generation are a bunch of bums, then the generation(s) who raised you are at fault. Since the early 1950s there has arisen a massive, lucrative hustle known as the "youth" market: pop music, movies, fashions, TV, all aimed at minors. The vapid, offensive content is put there by adults; the kids don't own studios and media outlets, you know. And of course the kids don't have jobs either, and the means to afford these toys and fantasies. Mommy and Daddy are voluntarily paying for all that, and cellphones too.

My father (1916-91) was old-fashioned even in his day, in that he believed that advertising to children is unethical. Because it's not their money. But that attitude is pretty much extinct today. Browse "advertising nag factor" and see.

A lot of people breed because they're "supposed to," and with no thought about where all these new people will live and what they will do for a living. They don't have time for their children, so they park them in front of the TV…and then wonder where the bad manners and greed came from! This is a continuation of what THEIR parents did to them!

Those ancestors are now sometimes called the "great" generation. Philip Wylie, one of their own, called them a _Generation of Vipers_ (1942 and subsequent). I think you'll like it.
