Attacks On Women's Appearances in Political Discussions

You know what I am sincerely tired of?

A woman's physical appearance entering a political debate at any time, at any place, for any reason at all...as if it has any bearing on the discussion or is any kind of appropriate for what is being discussed.

It started awhile ago, when I noticed that men in the Politics and Current Events forum would compliment my looks when I was trying to get a serious point across. Then I noticed this happening in my everyday life, along with men in my everyday life ignoring me to listen to something another man had to say...but that's besides the point.

As I became more familiar with this, I familiarised myself with the "Hillary Clinton is a hag" tactic. Yes, because her looks have anything to do with her presidential campaign, right? Are we holding a Meat Auction (er- excuse me- Miss America)? Is this the 2008 Diva Search? I never knew one of the qualifications to be President was to be sexually attractive, because...excuse me...LOOK AT ALL OUR PAST PRESIDENTS! Look at all the ugly dorks we've elected!

Then, there's the "Conservative women are hotter than liberal women" thing. First of all, who in their right mind finds the gangly, awkward bag-of-bones zombie with an Adam's Apple Ann Coulter "attractive"? Second of all...if a woman is fighting for a cause, and is intelligent and has fostered other talents other than her appearance...what the hell do you care? Some women have other talents besides "looking pretty". This is a major problem, inferring that the women of the Left are less because they aren't blond dolls like the women of the Right. Is that what you base a woman's merits off of, the way she looks? Seriously, you know what the first words out of people's mouths are when they talk about Cindy Sheehan, if they don't like her?? "That ugly bitch", etc. Wow, so instead of criticising her motives and f***ed up way of going about things, you attack her face. Good on you, you're an intelligent one. All that says to me is that they can't really think of a legitimate reason to attack the woman except that they know she's a Liberal and they know she's not very pretty. So they'll just call her "another ugly Liberal woman".

Women will never advance if they allow these attacks, and/or participate in them. Women have ideas, we are not just a face and a body. I am seriously tired of hearing attacks on our appearances in a place where appearance should hold no water: the realm of politics. When was the last time anyone attacked Mike Huckabee and John McCain for being ugly f***s? And when was the last time anyone pointed out that Fred Thompson looks like a bulldog (perhaps a bulldogs ass), and Rudy Giuliani looks like a rodent? Nope, I've never heard any of that. Only that Hillary Clinton isn't very pretty. Sickening.

Are you not guilty of yourself of what you are accusing others of doing. Besides it is a very small % of the population that believe what the hacks and candidates have to say, it is just more empty promises they cannot deliver on unless the Congress is the same majority party the President is.

Unless a discussion is about physical appearances (i.e. "What NOT To Wear"), it should NEVER enter into any kind of intelligent conversation or ideological debate. Those who do so simply show a decided lack of brain cells and class.

You get two thumbs up from me, g/f.

Really good, LGQ. It's a double standard...and you are right.....women do a lot of harm by feeding into ideals of beauty and reinforcing them. What frequently happens is we face a double bind---choosing between two equally unattractive choices-----if we doll ourselves up, we are fake.......if we go natural......we are unattractive. Tough place for us to be.

Very good blog, but I have to ask. Is it wrong for me to say that Jenna Bush is really hot?

Well, I agree with you! Women should be considered equally in those discussions!

But, you know most right-wing christian men believe a womans place is in the home pregnant and bare-footed! Much less having a brain and an opinion to rival the dominate males position! This is the way things are taught and believed in a religious society! I have heard most of my life a woman is never to speak in church for any reason! You know they carry the burden of getting Adam kicked out of the Garden of Eden!

You do know women were not allowed to vote until the early 20th century. Even the Constitution says all "men" are created equal....women are not mentioned at all!

Some if not all the christian marriage vows say this for the female...." love, honor and "obey"...!

I don't agree with any of that baloney....as I believe you already know...if not then you know it now!

A question for you....." Is it a man's world?"......!!

it's the old double standard. men grow older and they're "distinguished". woman just get old, and it doesn't matter if it's politics or general life.

quite frankly i can find a LOT more about Mrs. Clinton to pick on than her age or appearance. to each his or her own.

Of course. In a population that worships--is practically founded on--fashion, celebrities, advertising and TV, how dare you suggest Substance-Over-Appearance? This is show biz. It's what the yaps want, and that's why there's so damned much of it. It's worse for women, but as a man, I assure you that regardless of qualifications, there is no way in hell I could be elected President. Because I won't wear a tie. Too petty a thing to consider? Yes, but I'd bet you the next pitcher it would sink a political campaign.

For the most part, I've been impressed that little has been mentioned about Hilary's choices of dress, but every so often, someone just can't resist falling into old habits.

The worst part? Most often it's other women.

great blog...

I have to admit that I do care what Sen. Clinton looks like when she walks on stage.

I feel like she is representing women and how a smart woman can look good.

I remember when the O.J. Simpson murder trial was stopped for the whole day—and all day long—because a female prosecutor appeared in court wearing an angel pin. Not sure I'd recognize such a thing if I saw it, but that was all the rage for the rest of the week. In the ensuing feeding-frenzy, it was Duh Peepelz who was Duh Sharks.

Great blog and so, so true. It is sad that our society puts so much emphasis on looks over intelligence. How womens' image of beauty is created at such a young age. But I'll have to admit, Rudy Guiliani looks better in drag
