We all lie right? With a show of hands, let me see all of you who have never told a lie. Now all of you who have your hand up, put it down because you are lying. So if we all have lied before, does that make us liars? Probably not. Is there ever a time when lying is acceptable? Most people would probably answer that question with a yes. I do not agree.
I got the inspiration to write this blog from listening to a radio sports talk show this morning. On this show the hosts were talking about the Roger Clemens Senate hearing. During the course of their conversation they talked about Andy Pettitte, a very close and personal friend of Mr. Clemens. Now while Mr. Pettitte was not at the hearing, he did give the committee a deposition about what he new about the hearing.
Now the hearing was about whether Mr. Clemens took steroids or not. Mr. Pettitte was asked during his deposition if Mr. Clemens ever told him about ever taking steroids. Mr. Pettiitte apparrantly was being truthful when he admitted his close friend did infact mention to him that he did take steroids.
So now back on this radio show the hosts were asking the question if Mr. Pettitte should have lied to protect his friend. They both agreed they would have if they were in Mr. Pettitte's shoes. They both agreed that since they would probably get away with lying that they would lie to protect their friend.
Is this right? Is there acceptable times to lie? Is a friendship suppose to be stronger then doing the morally right thing? If it is ok to lie in this situation, then what other situations is it ok to lie in?
If Mr. Pettitte infact knew his friend was taking steroids, lied about it and got caught lying about it, he could go to jail for that. Now I ask you, is it fair of Mr. Clemens to put Mr. Pettitte in that situation if he is guilty? Who is the bigger betrayer of the friendship here. The one who compromises the friendship by telling the truth or the one who put his friend in jeopardy by forcing him to lie to protect himself? I do not know if Mr. Clemens took steroids or not but it is obvious someone is lying. It would seem that Mr. Clemens would have more to gain by lying.
There are all kinds of lies. Big lies. Fibs. Little white lies. Protection lies. So why do we lie? Are we really afraid of the truth? Is it better to live in denial? Men, would you be honest if you were asked by your lady if this outfit made her look fat and it actually did make her look fat? She might be upset with you then for being honest. But then again, if you lie she will know you lied if she hears someone else say how fat she looks.
This is what I think. Lying is a short time solution with a lifetime of headaches. How many lies have to be covered up with other lies? And lets face it, most lies will get discovered eventually. So you only postponed the problem. Infact, you probably are making the situation worse by lying.
There are 10 Commandments in the Old Testament that God demands we live by. The most commonly broken of these commandments is the Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness commandment(lying). Why do we think it is ok to lie? Do we think it does less harm then the other commandments?
For me personally, I use to lie all the time. I don't do that anymore. I am not saying I do not lie at all, I slip every once in a while, but what I am saying is that I discover that not lying is so much easier then it is to lie and always have to worry about covering up that lie. And if the truth hurts then I am sorry, but that is what you are going to get from me. When it comes down to it, I am quite sure your family and friends would prefer the truth from you also.
