When I was growing up in and around Glasgow Scotland many moons ago the local cuisine was fish and chips out of the "chippie". One could buy some deep fired haddock encased in luscious dripping greasy batter and soggy chips, pure yummy all served in greaseproof paper and wrapped in a newspaper. These were the days that heartburn had no yet been invented nor did we understand that this is a potential heart attack in a newspaper wrapping it did not carry any government health warnings. Additionaly if one was really needing a real fill up, the local chippie would deep fry you a pizza, oh to see them squeezing the roasting beef lard out of your pizza was to die for. All this and you could sit on a wall and read a page of the local paper whilst eating, all very inexpensive and filling.

As my taste-buds adjusted and matured it was now the days of the Indian curry and beer, a lethal combo. For some reason Scots love curries and hence it is known as the European curry capital. There is even a road in Glasgow re - named the Khyber pass due to the many Indian restaurants situated along this busy and bustling neighbourhood. Yes one could not beat the Madras curries, it was like consuming hydrochloric acid when this food hit yer tongue, the sensation brought beads of sweat to ones forehead. There was the saying in these days, Madras in the evening Madass in the morning. Many a curry was washed down with copious amounts of foaming ales to rehydrate oneself , it was to die for.

Nowadays I have come along way. My friend is Korean and cooks me food everyday, I had never heard of Kimchee.Looking back when I first heard the name I though it was her name. To eat cured cabbage which has sat outside is unheard of back home it would be a compost heap and no-one would dare try that manouver. I love her cucumber and green onion version all served up with other oddities. Its funny that she speaks in Englishi when I ask general questions but when I I am suspicious of her creation she no speaki the Englshi no more and no understandi me. Forgive my grammar and spelling but her ways are very addictive and now I am multi lingual.

Its amazing to me when I look back over the years and reflect on the various foodstuffs that I have consummed, I never thought I would see the day that I would have eaten so many weird and wonderful food. I say thanks for the experience and so far survived the foodstuffs consumed which now carry government health warnings.

I remember fish and chips… When I was a kid there was a place that sold batter dipped fish and round fried potatoes in the shape of chips… you could get it by the bucket size for a family… My Mom would pick some up after Church on Sundays sometimes… It was rapped in paper printed to look like news papers… I remember picking off the batter because I didn’t like the taste of all that oil in my mouth.. I even worked at the place after my daughter was born for a few months… It’s closed down and there is a fruit market in it’s place… I haven’t thought about that in years… I don’t live in the same state anymore.. Funny how remembering food can bring back so many other memories… Thanks for reminding me!

I was never really a fan of the food in Scotland.
I found it all a little strange.

Meat pies served with baked beans in tomato sauce, deep fried pies and haggis to name a few just didn't appeal to me.

A friend of mine has a restaurant in Scotland, he is Scottish. He put a new dish on the menu 'Chicken with Tarragon Sauce' and the customers asked him to take the Tarragon out of the sauce!

The best places I have found in the UK for food are in the South West of England.
They seem to be spoiled with Quality establishments there.

wrapped in a newspaper.

Food isn't served in newspaper anymore. A shame that.
It's not quite the same.

Remember opening up that soggy newspaper and that smell?
