It was time to say good bye...from this earth. His struggle to live had been short though his life very long. Ninety five years is a long time. Now it's over. And I was glad for him.
I bought the last gifts I knew I'd ever get him. It was Valentine's Day and I knew in my heart, he'd be gone by the next day. Lovingly I picked out a card, a bunch of pink carnations and a little teddy bear to send him on his way. As I took them to his room, I saw he was comatose, barely breathing.
"Grandpa, Happy Velentine's Day!! I brought you some pink carnations." I put the teddy bear next to him and read him the card. " I love you, Grandpa!" I said. He barely opened eyes and said "I love you too, honey!" His eyes closed again, off to a place where he couldn't be reach again. I thought this was his last gift...
He passed during the night as I expected. He was so anxious to be with Grandma again. I had said a few days before he was going to pass away on Valentine's Day. Everyone said how could I know. I knew my Grandfather, the sentimental romantic that he was, he wanted to be with Grandma on Valentine's Day.

The next day, I went through his things with mist in my eyes...remembering all the good times, 45 years of well stored memories. He and I loved classical music. We would swap CD's, records, tapes thru the years.
Thank you for this last gift, Grandpa. I know it will keep on giving for a long time.
I miss you Grandpa, thank you for all that you did for me all those years. Thank you for the love, the safety and the joy of showing me your true devoted love and dedication to Grandma.
He died February 15th...just a few hours after Valentine's Day.

Sometimes it's hard to explain the sense of shared peace when someone like Grandpa leaves. My father was almost that age and I think we all had a chance to say our goodbyes in a similar way, individually.
...and there's something extra in the air when you know they're "together at last." 
Enjoy the CDs, tapes and wonderful memories you shared...what a special legacy and gift to each other, Gal and Grandpa...
