There are many heros in the world today. Most of these heros are usually unknown to the public. They go about their lives doing great things for people less fortunate then them. These heros usually have to put their own lives on hold while helping these other people. Many sacrifices must be made to help the unfortunate. Many of these heroic acts go unrecognized. Many go unheralded. But that is just it. Most of these heros are not doing it to get praised or recognized, they just have a love in their heart and a need to help.
This brings me to a person I consider a hero. And even though she does not do what she does to get praise, I am going to praise her anyway. This person is one of the most beautiful women in the world. She is an acclaimed actress who has 3 golden globe awards and a academy award. She has all the fame and fortune that most people dream of. So what does she do with her free time? She spends it making the lives of foreign refugees, the poverished, the sick and less fortunate better. She does this in the worst parts of the world.
Of course the person I am talking about is Angelina Jolie. Say what you will about her, we all have to realize that all of us make mistakes and are not perfect. But what we can boast about and applaud her for is the time, energy, money and love she gives to making the lives of the less fortunate better. While most people only focus on the tabloid aspect of this woman, I recommend everyone to research just what she is really all about.
Last week in Iraq she was there helping refugees who fled to other countries come back to destroyed homes and who basically have nothing left. She was working with the US Army commanders on how to help these refugees make the transition. I myself was in Iraq for 21 months and can attest to what some of the refugees are going through. While our own politicians bicker in Washington DC and accompolish nothing, she gets things done. Maybe she should be a senator, she can only do better then the ones we already got.
This act of heroism last week is nothing new for Angelina Jolie. She has been involved with this kind of work since 2001. While filming the movie Tomb Raider in Cambodia, she discovered refugees there that needed immediate help. On breaks from filming she would contact the UNHCR(United Nations High Commision for Refugees) to find out how she could help. Later that year she joined the group and was named a Goodwill Ambassador. That first year she helped refugees in Tanzania, Pakistan, Cambodia and Sierre Leone. Not only did she spend her time and energy helping these refugess, she also spent millions of her own dollars in the process.
"We cannot close ourselves off to information and ignore the fact that millions of people are out there suffering. I honestly want to help. I don't believe I feel differently from other people. I think we all want justice and equality, a chance for a life with meaning. All of us would like to believe that if we were in a bad situation someone would help us."
That was a quote from Angelina Jolie back in 2001.
Since 2001, Angelina Jolie has been to countries all over the world, working with local governments to help those who most need it. She does all this with little fanfare and recognition. Today, millions of former refugees around the world are having better lives due to the hard work, dedication and love that Ms. Jolie and the people she works with have given. Many of the children who were starving, homeless, sick and desperate are now in school.
So what Ms. Jolie did in Iraq recently is not surprising and is a testament to her character and spirit. If only we had more people in the world who would help out like this, think of all the people in this world who are currently suffering that would have their lives turned around.
For all the hard work that she has done, Angelina Jolie is my hero of the day and someone I admire very much.
