For the first week of March, the city of South Pasadena in California passed a proclamation where the use of swear words(cussing) was not allowed in city limits. The city did not make it against the law, so you would not be arrested for using swear words. You would just be frowned upon if you did.

I think this is something that is silly because most people are not going to care about it, but it got me to think why do people use swear words? I don't use swear words anymore but I use too, and I think back and I have no idea why I did.

So why do people use swear words? Is it cool? Does it make you hip? A rebel? Maybe your english is limited where you need swear words instead of regular words to describe something? I don't know. I do know that the use of swear words is becoming so common in everyday talk.

I have a question. Why do we try to keep kids from saying it or hearing it yet we as adults use them commonly? If it is ok for us adults to use them then why not kids too? Why should something be banned from kids if the adults use them? Is the age of 13 the universal age agreed upon by us adults as the acceptable age in which kids can hear and use this language? Is that why we have PG-13 in the movies? I don't get it.

If we don't want kids using swear words then maybe as adults we should set a good example and not use them. I know you can say that about everything we ban from children, ie; smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc. But unlike those items, swear words do not damage a kids upbringing but they do influence them. There are thousands of words in the dictionary, do we really need these few to express ourselves?

I am not saying that people who use these swear words are bad people, I am just saying it is so much nicer not to hear them. I know if I was dating a woman (stop laughing, it could happen) and she used swear words in public it would make me cringe. If you want to use them then feel free, that is your right, just remember kids are listening and they hear what you say too. Lets be the example.

In my opinion, using foul language is a matter of disrespect for others and one's self.
I find it particularly offensive hearing older women and men swear....seems like they should have reached the age of setting a better example for others.
Good blog.
