If this does not cause alarm, I do not know what will. I came across a study today by the CDC(Centers for Disease Control) that at least one in four teenage girls nationwide has contracted a sexually transmitted disease. In other words, more than 25% or more than 3 million females between the ages of 14-19 have some sort of sexual disease. This report did not report on male teens.

I do not know about anyone else, but at first I was shocked to read this. But then I became concerned and finally sad.

I was not shock to learn that some teens were having sex, that would be naive on my part. I was shocked however to learn that so many are. This report only mentions those who have a disease, but does not touch upon how many are actually having sex. If more than 25% have a disease, imagine how many are having sex and so far have gotten lucky enough not to catch something. Am I to believe that 50% or more teens are having sex? This is very alarming.

I am concerned because what is this going to do about the future of these children? I would be interested to see how many teens have become pregnant. Doesn't this situation alarm anyone? In the report, it mentions that a virus that causes cervical cancer is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in teen girls. Cancer? What about AIDS? HIV? Now we are talking about life and death. Wow, has it come to this were we are worrying about teens and life/death situations? We are talking about teens. In the future, will these stats only get worse? 10 years from now, since so many teens are having sex, will the totals get over 50%? I don't know about anyone else, but this so scary.

But as scary as this is, to me it is more sad then anything else. This proves, among other things, that we are failing our youth as adults. I wonder how many children in the early 1900's had sexual diseases or were pregnant. I am sure not nearly as much as now. So then, what is different about now and then? Adult behavior! Back then there were no movies with sex in it. No music with sex in it. No TV with sex in it. No internet with sex in it. No magazines with sex in it. We as adults and our habits and our wants are the biggest promotors of sex to these children. We are selfious, we want our sex in movies, music, internet, tv, magazines and so forth and we are not shielding our children from this.

Children are creatures of their enviroment. If they are around people(friends or family) who do drugs, there is a greater chance they will at least try them as oppose to not trying them if drugs are not around. Same goes for alcohol, cigarettes and sex. If children see sex in movies, or magazines, or the internet, what do you think the chances they will get curious about it and try it for themselves?

We as adults need to be a better and bigger influence in the lives of these children. If that means giving up the things we like in order to achieve this then so be it. I mean there are some of us adults who want to teach sex in school and pass out condoms? That is such a defeatus attitude. I guess their thinking is that since the children are going to have sex anyways, might as well teach them a safer way how. HUH? That is the lazy way out.

Be the adult and influence them. Otherwise, our children will end up in the hospital for the treatment of a disease or for pregnancy. Or even worse yet, we will bury them. Imagine having to bury a child for just having sex. In any event, what kind of future will these children have with these setbacks. And if the future is bleak for our children, then the future of the country is bleak because the children will one day be running it. God bless the children and lets as adults protect them, not give into them.

You forgot to mention the 50% of those 1 out of 4 are either African American or Hispanic.Which really shows the truth. Children from underprivileged or broken homes have a 50% more likelihood of not only contracting an STD but committing a crime as well, which is why the fix starts with educating the parents into applying the right tools to guide their kids. When everyone has the same information the success rate goes up exponentially. If you were to take the slice of the white population that falls under the same socio-economic demographic you will find the same thing. The overall environment which the kids are brought up in plays a major role in their behavior and growth. When there is only one parent the statistic doubles. Not to take away credit where credit is due...there are many single parents out there who are successful at raising their kids and those numbers are growing. Those are the people and especially the single women who should get the most help and recognition.
