I love God. I love reading the bible. I love to express my faith in God. I would like to think that I set a good example as to how non believers in God see how my love for people is demonstrated. I do not yell or swear at people. I always forgive people. I always want to help people. And I always want to make others feel loved. So why then do these people who I do not cause harm to and love call me names and belittle my faith? I think the biggest reason, but I am sure not the only reason, is that some religious leaders do not practice what the bible preaches.

Now before anyone gets carried away and thinks that I am judging these people, please don't. This is not an indictment of these people, it is simply examples of cause and effect. The saddest part of all is that most people who do not have a favorable opinion of faiths or people with faith in God often cite these religious leaders and their actions or words as their reason for animosity.

If you have not been paying attention closely to the news the past couple of days then you might have missed what sort of trouble Barack Obama has gotten into. Not for what he has said or done, but who he has associated himself with. I truly believe this is going to keep Barack Obama out of the White House.

Barack Obama has been attending the same church for 20 years. At this church there is a pastor by the name of Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. who has been a long time spiritual advisor to Mr. Obama, baptised Mr. Obama and his family and even performed his marriage. However this pastor says things about people and about America that make most people say 'huh?'

Here is just a few quotes of this pastor.

“The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color. The government lied.”

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people"

“Barack knows what it means, living in a country and a culture that is controlled by rich white people,”

This is just an example of some of what the pastor has said in the past. There is plenty more where these came from. Today Mr. Obama explained his relationship with the pastor and tried to seperate himself from the comments. Mr. Obama said he never heard the pastor preach these quotes and that these quotes are in no way how he believes or thinks. But does it matter. Mr. Obama is guilty of association in the eyes of a lot of people who heard about this. Is it fair? Probably not. But that is the way things go for the faithful. The faithful live their lives under a huge microscope and judge by not only their actions, but the actions of others as well.

This is only one example of a high profile pastor giving the faithful a bad name. Here are a few others. Rev. Sharpton, Rev. Jackson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Robert Schuler, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker to mention a few. Some of these religious leaders spread hate and division, are greedy, preach sexual morality and then do the opposite. They spend millions and millions of dollars on these huge and fancy cathedrals. Have huge personal bank accounts. Suggest assasinating foreign leaders. Then there was the catholic church sex scandals with little boys.

High profile religious leaders are not the only ones who do God more harm then good. Some of the followers can be just as hypocritical. Once this happens, people who do not like the faithful or look for any reason to bad mouth religions use these actions to prove their point. So the good work and intentions of many are wasted when a few destroy the image.

Mr. Obama said today in a written statement, “The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation,” Obama wrote, adding that over the years, “Rev. Wright preached the gospel of Jesus, a gospel on which I base my life."

But Jesus never preached anger. Never preached division. He always preached love and forgiveness. So when someone like this pastor is associated with preaching the gospel of Jesus but then turns around and preaches this hatred, it destroys the words of Jesus.

I guess what I am hoping for is that the non believers of God and faith will understand that not all who believe agree with the actions of these leaders. Some of us want to distant ourselves with this sort of behavior and truly live our lives according to preachings of Jesus. In other words, please try to form an opionion of each individual involved and not as a group. For clearly the actions of these people do more harm to God then good.

I've made my distaste for the 700 Republican club know for quite a while. But the fatwah against the Supreme Court, and accusing gays and atheists of being responsible for 9-11 weren't isolated incidents. People have stopped listening to them. And because the masses ignore them now, their comments are growing more ignorant and asinine. They aren't dealing with their newfound unimportance very well.

That's why God says He is the church and tells people to go directly to him.
