It takes a special person, with a heart full of love to rescue, tend to and love these squirrels as you do. It amazes me that if given the chance a creature of our creator's making can be so entertwined in our lives as humans.

Kudos to them for managing to catch her, that's quite a good trick.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Pancake. And hoping Links and Eggs don't show up to keep her company.

Just catching up on your fab blogs.. it is sad when little creatures have to suffer at the hands of man and joyous when they are saved by the same hands I thought of you today saw a youtube clip on a squirrel.. dramatic look not sure you have seen it but it made me laugh...

So, did the head trauma come from before she was caught?
How many litters have been born while they were in your loving house hold?

I'll answer Katt's questions here in case anyone else is interested.
Yes, something apparently happened to Pancake during the week she went missing from her daily visits to this particular family. She's a regular there, and it seems at many other homes along the street so no telling if she got dinged by a passing car, took a bad fall during the mating chases (not her own, necessarily, but a whole bunch of males chasing one female through the trees can easily disturb other observing squirrels), or took a fall while escaping a predator (remember the hawks have been much more visible this year here). It likely happened and she then holed up for a week trying to recover. Living off what was stashed in her nest or staying very, very close to her nest if she came down at all.
I've not had the bittersweet blessing of a mother squirrel giving birth while in my care. Certainly I have a couple of rehabber friends who have had this happen, but it's not really a very common occurrence to take in a pregnant female. As for any residents here, except for the southern flying squirrels out back in the pre-release pen, who live in groups in the wild, the NRs are all housed separately since the larger squirrels don't play well together as adults. And the extensive chases you see are apparently part of what triggers estrus in the female so no way to build a cage THAT big even if I actually considered the lunacy of trying to breed them. (Simply put: tree squirrels don't breed in captivity; any babies seen for sale by "breeders" are generally stolen or orphans that should rightfully be released.)
