You know, I read in the back of a religious magazine, once, that there were riots in Italy because they were fed up with the News re-running old stories where they would just change the date or maybe the date and a few names or stick a little new scene in amongst old footage.
I waited, but I never saw anything on our News about that.
But I did see a story about a kitten that had been run a decade or so before. And I did see some controversy over someone in the Air Force being raped that had already had a small airing in the past. And I did see some pictures of men with underwear over their heads, duct taped to a bed or some such, which had been shown when I was a teenager - on the local news- as part of a story as to how hazing in the American military had gotten out of control... but this time those same pictures were connected to a story of how American military personnel were torturing others. And I did see as much of a beheading of a man as I had seen before .. oh, they showed more this time, but I did not watch it. When I was a teenager I did watch it, but they did not show them actually going through with it, just some of the talking and the threats and the man on his knees, etc. .. . but it was the same men in the video, come back to haunt me but connected to a new "News" story after all these years. And I did see a small bit of news in a Newspaper and online and oh so briefly on a News program that was more local about the Weapons of Mass Destruction and how the Russians freely admitted that they had sold them to person in the Middle East and that they later repo'ed them because they were not paid in full for them.
That was quickly un-reported though .
What amazes me is how many people do not remember the first time they saw these things on the News, themselves. I can't be the only one who knows .. I don't even have that good of a memory, but come on: men with underwear over their heads: someone has to be around that remembers that on the news in the 1980's! And this is supposed to be a country of observant people, who aren't going to let the wool get pulled over their eyes. *sigh*
Yet I hear older people sometimes talking about how if the young people had any idea how many freedoms they had lost in the last several decades, especially the last one, they would see the similarity between New America and Nazi Germany and they would quake in fear. The News is part of that.
It truly saddens me that '1984' is not even that scary of a book anymore.. and people are out there who really do believe that we have always been at war with the East.. .and anything else they are told.
Why do you think some of the greatest Newsmen of all times are now either suddenly dead or suddenly retired?

Thank you for your appearance HopelesslyHopeful. I hope that those who read this blog can see why I wanted David Copperfield to lead into your comment.
My final guest for this blog is Pete Townsend:
We Wont Get Fooled Again:
We'll be fighting in the streets With our children at our feet And the morals that they worship will be gone And the men who spurred us on Sit in judgement of all wrong They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray... We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come We knew it all along We were liberated from the fold, that's all And the world looks just the same And history ain't changed 'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray... We don't get fooled again, no, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside If we happen to be left half alive I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Yeaahhhh!!
There's nothing in the streets Looks any different to me And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye And the parting on the left Is now parting on the right And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray... We don't get fooled again Don't get fooled again! No, no!
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!
Meet the new boss! Same as the old boss!

It is interesting to me that when I was in college I studied the raise and fall of Yellow Journalism..when in actuality it is stronger now than ever. Just that no one complains any more. The complaints now are news is boring without it! So why are these same things used again.. Archives..easier to sensationalize the story!

I was waiting and wondering.
1984 still is scary to me. I knew when I read it what was to come, and now it is here, and it's right on our front doorsteps. No...it's worse than that. It has come into our homes, uninvited. There's trouble in paradise.

I had to read it twice, I know I am a little slow on the uptake here.
My eyes have been opened so many times with things even worse. Maybe that is why I choose not to watch or listen much any more.

There's trouble in paradise. Yep! Check out the tv and movie shows that use the same plots, over and over, with minor variations .. and even the variations are usually just bits taken from another show.
Most of the writers of books, television shows, and movies don't even have to know how to write anymore, if they can afford a decent program! It's disgusting. The world is full of "canned art" and real writing, real efforts in painting, etc. don't really mean that much to most people anymore ..

Oh, I saw something in the news about Bush doing something one time then the same day that guy they thought killed Jon Benet shows up on the news. It was a fake out to make everyone forget what Bush did. And it worked! NO ONE saw the Bush article or remembers exactly what it was...even me! I tried to find that article and it got buried. Oh, and by the way, they proved the guy could not have done Jon Benet and let him go.
Same as the old boss!

The thin end of the wedge...take a little bit of your freedom away and you'll never even miss it...
"The price of liberty is eternal vigilance" doesn't necessarily refer to the outside, it's the inside that's far more insidious. Do yourself a favor and read George Washington's Farewell Address - he tried to warn us even then.
But I don't think he ever imagined that we'd be having our passports produced by China, or our ports overseen by Dubai.

People in positions to be heard are doing something about our broken media ...
National Conference on Media Reform 2008 June 6-8, Minneapolis
So far scheduled to attend: Dan Rather, Arianna Huffington, Juan Gonzalez, Bill Moyers, Naomi Klein, Lawrence Lessig, Amy Goodman, Van Jones, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Robert Greenwald, Sen. Byron Dorgan, FCC Commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein, and many more.
Thousands are coming together for this amazing and inspiring weekend in Minneapolis on June 6-8. People who are tired of the pointless pundits, celebrity news, blatant stereotypes, and the same 10 songs on the radio wherever you go.
The National Conference for Media Reform is about turning our frustration into positive change. The event is filled with rousing speeches, musical performances, new films and dozens of interactive panels and hands-on workshops. Topics will include media ownership, Internet freedom, the future of independent media, media diversity, grassroots organizing, hip-hop activism and much, much more.
For a taste of what this conference is about, video here:
