I am so pissed.
So yesterday, I went to St. Vinny's and I found a hp scanner for $5. $5 I get all excited, cuz it's compatible with my operating system, so I skip to the counter with my new-used scanner in hand, pay for it and jollily go home. I didn't get a chance to hook it up yesterday, so, I decided I would tonight. I install the software, and my heart is pounding with excitement at the thought of digitalizing all of my photos I've taken over the years, and I connect the scanner to my computer, plug it in and push the little round button and... nothing. NOTHING. Not a goddamn thing. So I check the connections, they are tight and connected properly. Still nothing. I call my uncle, the tech support God. I tell him all this, he says it's trash, and to take a baseball bat to it for my troubles. I plan to later this week.
To the asshat who left the scanner:
What the f*** were you thinking you greedy, dream killing son of a bitch?! You took a NON-WORKING scanner to St. Vinny's just so you could write $15 off your taxes? If I could ever find out who you were, I'd shove that NON-WORKING scanner down your throat and the ac adapter plug up your ass to see if they could connect in the the middle.
I sign off wishing your computer crashes right at the moment you finish a big project that your job depends on, and you weren't able to save it before the crash. Also I wish you elephantiasis of the asshole and herpes of the eyes you donkey munching piece of crap.

Check the voltage coming out of the power supply. Then maybe just short out the scanner's power switch and turn it on and off with your power strip.

I'm all about freecycle or second hand too....don't assume the person who dropped off the scanner knew it wasn't working...maybe it was and someone at St. Vinny's dropped it...maybe a customer did something to it.....lots of things.....
Sorry it didn't work!
But, a million things could have happened to it since it was last hooked up

I don't think just cause it's "second hand" you should be expecting it not to work. People upgrade all the time to newer, bigger and better and the "old" lose their value when a newer model comes out. Presenting the opportunity of being able to get some good deals. At least you are only out $5. I agree with Jim, hate to be in your path when you really get angry. It's got to be the red hair.

Chickee above mes right. I once returns an empty box. Yep empty. I put the manuals in and forget the dvd player. They took it. Paid me cash back cause I remembered not to empty out my pockets and found the receipt. I didnt realize my fortune til i got home and it was still hooked to the TV.  Two years and havent heard a thing.
