As I write this I am sitting in University Lounge, a coffee bar diagonally across the street from the University of Memphis. Took a while to get here: I had to pass by the Tiger Gift Shop and within a block of the Tiger Book Store. There is a railroad crossing nearby and, although there was no train coming, the traffic was as slow as if there was a train coming. Tiger fans with flags on their cars, and "Eye of the Tiger" being played from several directions. I've heard that song so many times in the last few weeks; it has always been one of my fav songs, and now, even more so. The bars on Highland Strip, just west of campus, are already filling. There is an hour and a half wait to get the latest Tigers shirts from either Tiger Book Store or the Tiger Gift Shop. Cars honking, but not out of impatience. Have never seen so much blue in one place.
Memphis has proved the media wrong. Very wrong! "Calipari can't coach." "Memphis can't beat Texas. Memphis can't beat UCLA. Weak conference. Poor old Mr. Love. It was said that Memphis couldn't contain him. He looked exhausted, bewildered, almost shell shocked. And that was in the first half.
Kansas, this is Memphis's time to shine. Move over! Memphis will win their first national championship. I don't think Memphis will dominate Kansas as much as they did Texas and perennial power UCLA, but Memphis will win. Lots of bad things have happened to Memphis. Many believe the King assassination put a curse on our city, and if you lived here, you would find that believable. Horrible crime. Corrupt politicians. Memphis is now regarded as Tornado Alley Central. Either Men's Fitness or Men's Health recently listed Memphis as Couch Potato Central.
Kansas, you have been national champion before. We have not. For once, one of the most divided cities in the country is now united. And the championship will hopefully be the start of many things to come. Many good things. I have prayed that God give us the victory, because this is more than a game--Memphis needs something good, something to unite all of us and instill pride in our city. We need it, and it will be. "if we win it, they will come.
I, too, have done things it was said that I would never do: I wrote a book and was told it would never be published (it was); I took on a crooked judge who dis my step mom wrong and was told I could not win (I did); I developed adult onset of scoliosis and was told I would never walk straight again (I do). So... does that make me a Tiger? I hope so!
