The View From Here Today

So today I lingered here at my desk longer than in the past week of being sick. And I once again enjoyed the view. I have this unsightly piece of cardboard that slides within the window frame it allows me to block the morning sun from waking me to early. Today it provided a frame for the scene I witnessed.

The trees across the way are now fuzzy with spring bloom. They are loosing that cold hard edge of winter’s grasp. Softening in the warmth of late spring here in the mountains. There’s this notch in my view created by a tall hemlock set back from the bank but fully 40’ higher than the alders that surround it. To the right standing against the horizon is a forked maple where the eagles roost in winter. It has several limbs that reach out over the water and gives them vantage to find the salmon that sustains them through the cold.

So it is today I noticed this picture held between the two trees. The slope of the distant mountain still covered with clean white snow. The ebb and flow of today’s clouds changed this view several times, the changing light and shadow drifting with my thoughts. I have a tendency to just sit and watch this ever changing picture sometimes it’s minutes but it can go on for hours. I have the luxury of not watching the clock and I am often unaware of date let alone time. My life is filled more with more dark and light than time and date. It’s been very nice being here, observing.

Today has been what I imagine to be cold and rainy, I haven’t ventured out in several days. As morning gave way to afternoon marked by the passing of the sun over the river. The light grew so dramatic and bright casting hard shadows, trees against trees. Darker shadows covering those not illuminated by the full sunshine. The air along the river is still but the clouds are moving at an alarming rate. It happened in an instant this wind swept that distant slope clean stacking the clouds behind the ridge and against the next mountain. Leaving me this view of fresh snow covering the trees that were dark and green just hours before.

So it goes this change of season here. Much like the fall as the trees are covered each evening in white to be returned to green each day. I imagine their struggle each day to find warmth to shed their cold coats of white. It stacks below their bows covering the forest floor. It builds through the winter and lingers into the summer feeding us and the river below with fresh water. The creeks are alive right now with that water filling the river and nourishing the ground. Filling my thoughts and life with change.

Beautiful blog...went off to fantasy land for a few minutes where I was at my favorite chalet in the Tennessee Mountains, just being. When in actuality I need to be "just being" out mowing the grass. Spring is officially alive in Alabama.

Very nice, K -

Reading this, I found a dreamy somnambulism coming over me... How nice to drowse and observe without regard to time...
